Is it the NDT (Thailand)

Have taken 2.5 grains NDT for many years. Recently started suffering from burning feet pads and tongue swelling late evening. Have noticed that the batch number for the NDT I currently take was hi-lighted for some reason on a facebook page but cannot find the page and reason why.

The GP has referred me to see a neurologist about the burning feet sensation - peripheral neuropathy but I have a long wait to see anyone.

GP wants me to only take levothyroxine but has no idea how to prescribe an equivalent dose.

I am told there is a gigantic number of pages on facebook! :-)

Do you mean Thyroid S?

Yes. Thyroid S batch TA22057 which your blogspot reported as possibly weak. I have refrained from going above 3 grains as a daily dose but find that 1/2 tablet Thyroid S relieves the soreness of tongue at bedtime.

I f you have been taking Thyroid s for years you will have noticed the difference. Starting with the TA22 ones. These are now shiny, greenish in colour and cannot be cut into quarters. I have had trouble with them too. Last year I started to fall down, after my blood test my FT3 was only. 2.76 when is was usually over 6. That was only 44 days after taking them. Have you had your bloods tested lately. I started taking them back in 2016 after my Thyroidectomy. I have been trying for months now with two more new batches but they seem different in every way.

Helvella. What type of Vitamin B6 is advised for burning feet please?

I think I would always try pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (often called P5P). The main point really being that the other forms could, if used in anything but low doses, have issues.

But don't go for high doses, at least to begin with!

Thank you. Have ordered Lamberts Vit B6 50mg. Will report on any results in a few weeks.

dyfrdwy, Burning sensation in the feet and tongue swelling might be a sign of under medication. Or the wrong balance of T4/T3.

Have you had your TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested since this started? If yes, please post the numbers so that members can get a better idea of your current thyroid status.

Thanks for reply. Saw GP today and forgot to request print out. Will remedy asap. TSH was 0.02 and he said FT4 was ‘normal’ Not aware they test FT3 here in South Wales.

TSH is too low, more than likely due to a high level of T3. Not testing FT3 when taking medicine containing T3 is utterly ridiculous, but you're right, it's very unlikely to be done through your GP. If you can afford to do a private test, you would get a better picture of things.

Although FT4 was deemed to be 'normal' I won't be surprised if it's near bottom of range.

I found that supplementing a low dose of levo (25mcg) alongside NDT to bring the FT4 level up, works better for me.

I like your suggestion of supplementing with levothyroxine along side the NDT. I shall try this and organise an FT3 test. Thank you.

Burning feet and swollen tongue often low B12

Common if thyroid levels are off

You need to get vitamin D, folate, B12 and ferritin levels tested at least annually

And test Ft3 obviously

all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

On T3 - day before test split T3 as 2 or 3 smaller doses spread through the day with last dose 8-12 hours before test

on NDT split as 2 doses

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins
