You have what looks to me like "geographic tongue". I have it too. It's very common and there is no treatment for it directly.

However, the problem is often associated with oral thrush (candida albicans), and getting treated for it (if you have it - and all that white stuff on your tongue suggests you probably do) may reduce the problem of geographic tongue.

I've been treated for oral thrush. It had little impact on the appearance of my tongue, and now I just live with the peculiar patches.

Developing candida is very common in people with thyroid problems. I don't know why. One way of improving the problem naturally is to reduce or eliminate sugar from the diet.

Hope that reassures you that nothing really awful or unusual is likely to be going on. :)

Please note I have no medical training.

Thank you, I will look into it a bit more now I know what to look up! I do notice that it gets worse if I have had a lot of sugary food/drink. I will mention the thrush thing when I speak to doctor next.

Thanks again

People ask about all sorts of things on here, and toilet habits and problems get a lot of mentions. So discussing a tongue problem is quite genteel, really. :D

Common when hypo to have gut issues

But you might find a nutritionist better help than a GP for treating it.

Have you tried probotics? Just a thought, that the bacteria in kefir might be a way of killing off the yeasts that cause thrush, rather than antibiotics.

It won't be good for your teeth, but manuka honey or cider vinegar might do the trick quicker. Also raw garlic, if you don't mind solitary confinement!

Haha Leverette, I am a monster for the raw garlic... Most people are too polite to comment ;)

One of my friends never smells, after eating several raw cloves. I reek after peeling it, never mind eating it!

My herbalist friend suffers with vaginal thrush, & swears by pricked whole garlic cloves, threaded with cotton for removal.

Looks like yeast .. don't eat sugar and take acidophilus ... should see results ... if not ... go see Gp

... he won't be in the slightest bit bothered and you shouldn't be either ... it's very common and no need for embarrassment

Best of luck
