Hi all I am new here!

Just had results back from doctors and they are 8.6 which i believe is low side of normal. I have to wait until next week to speak to doctor but I am showing at least 75% of the common hypo symptoms. I feel rather frustrated as I thought I finally had answer to my 'issues'.

Hi I assume this is Tsh result, can you tell us range if you have it, it will be figures in brackets after the 8.6. have they not tested t4/t3 so we can get better picture of what's happening with your thyroid.

Hi, I think it's my T4 result, I have asked the doctors for a print out of my bloods over last 18mth, apparently my levels have been around the 8 in that time.

If that's your t4result then that seems pretty low, but can't tell for certain without ranges, are you having any symptoms that lead you to think there is a problem with thyroid? When you get your results post on forum and members with give advice

oops just seen you have said you have symptoms

I am tired beyond belief, anxious, depressed, achy, NO libido, brain fogged, hair loss on eyebrows (had then tattooed last year as they were that bad!) marks on my tongue, dry gritty eyes, constipation and poor appetite to name a few!!!

I am currently on HRT as had full hysterectomy sept 2015 and I am on fluoxetine, been on since Christmas for depression & anxiety.

I think they have said the range is 8-18 so it's the low side of normal.

So sorry you are suffering such bad symptoms, these definitely sound like a problem with thyroid. Standard practice gp's prescribe antidepressants when you go and complain of all these things when what's really needed is for thyroid to be properly medicated, good idea to get vitamin levels checked especially b12as being low in this one can cause you to feel depressed and anxious.Shaws has already given best advice about what to do next. Will look out for your results, best wishes xx

Hi, I have had a print out of my results and looks like they have just tested my TSH !?! Which is normal ... 2.925 (0.34-5.60)

The doctor is ringing me on Monday, not sure what questions I should be asking now?

Hi I would start by asking how come they only tested Tsh, as can't get overall picture of what thyroid is doing with just tsh test, need t4/t3tested as well at very least.

Thank you,

The more I read the more convinced I am that my thyroid is affected but I am nervous of being brushed off by the doctor.

I am 39 and had full hysterectomy 09/15 then went straight on to HRT to prevent menopause etc. A lot of my symptoms I attributed to my hormones settling down etc but after looking into the thyroid now think otherwise.

Could my HRT affect the thyroid tests in anyway? I also take various health supplements, would they have any effect on the results?

I would appreciate any advice xx

Hi, I fear you may be right that doc will brush it off as he /she has only tested Tsh and it's in normal range. I would ask why they didn't do full thyroid test, it could be that lab wouldn't do it once they saw tsh was in normal range. You could ask if they will test for antibodies as if you have them they are more likely to treat you, although nice guidelines state that tsh needs to be more than 10 before they will treat. It' barbaric as most people feel very unwell before that happens.write any questions down before you talk to gp as from experience with brain fog you can forget one or two.as for hrt I don't think that it would make any difference to results but you should check with gp.see if gp will do test for vitamins Shaw suggested in post as some of your symptoms could be lack of them and if you have a problem with thyroid you very often are low on vitamis.if you can't get full test for thyroid I would suggest you go private and get bloodtest forT3/t4 and antibodies etc blue horizon or medichecks do very good service send away for kit and do finger prick test then send them back results in 48hrs at least you would know for certain what's happening with thyroid then do new post on here with results for advice.good luck for tomorrow with gp let us know how it goes x

If TSH this is a sign of a struggling thyroid but you may not be treated until over 10. The Doc may want to retest ,try to keep it within two months.

You should ask for ferritin,folate,B12 ,D3 to also be tested as well as thyroid antibodies.

Welcome to our forum, and if the 8.6 is referring to the TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) it is not in the 'low side of normal'. It is on the high side. The problem is that in some other countries we will be diagnosed if TSH is around 3 and the top of the range is around 5 but in the UK they state that it has to reach 10 before diagnosing. I shall give you a list of clinical symptoms which you can tick.

Ask GP to test thyroid antibodies, because if you have them you should be prescribed levothyroxine.

Blood tests should always be the very earliest, fasting (you can drink water) and if on thyroid hormone replacements (usually levothyroxine) allow 24 hours gap between the last dose and the test.

Ask GP to test B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate as we can be deficient and thus have symptoms too. Always get a print-out of your results for your own records and post if you have a query.

RFU,

It is NOT true that all antidepressants and PPIs cause thyroid patients problems or that patients should wean off them.

Thyroid medication doses can be adjusted to accommodate other medications which may impair absorption of Levothyroxine. It is reckless to state that people should wean off when you don't even know why they are prescribed medication.

Someone with Barretts Oesphagus is treated with PPIs to prevent cancer of the oesphagus developing.

RFU,

And sadly some people on this forum wrongly attribute all depression and other conditions to undertreated thyroid which leads them to make incorrect and sweeping generalisations about antidepressants and PPI

RFU,

We are where we are but it is ridiculous to attribute every condition and illness to thyroid dysfunction.
