i had a total thyroidectomy last july 2015 and has my radiation a month after. i have been taking 100mcg at night because i work at night. this past few days i have been taking whey protein before my workout, that is lunch time after i got home. is it OK to include it in my daily medication? i need to ask because i plan to include hydroxycut in my daily workout as i gained a lot of weight this past few years and i need a fat burner to incorporate with my whey protein intake. please advise. thanks

Djcn106,

If you were optimally medicated on Levothyroxine you may not need the hydroxycut.

You are under medicated to have TSH 4.0 and TSH should be suppressed <0.1 as TSH can stimulate any remnant cells not destroyed by RAI increasing the risk of recurrence. Your GP or specialist should increase your dose to 150mcg to bring down your TSH as quickly as possible. If you become over replaced dose can later be reduced to 125mcg.

You should have a follow up thyroid test 6-8 weeks after increasing Levothyroxine. Arrange an early morning and fasting (water only) blood draw when TSH is highest, and take Levothyroxine after your blood draw.

i wonder why my endocrinologist didnt increase my dosage because last January 2016 my TSH was at 1.01 and TG is 0.0, but he said since the result of my November result is still within the reference interval, i should still have the same dosage as before. but after you mentioned TSH should be reduced now i realized my Nov 2016 and Jan 2016 result are way to apart. i have a follow up on May this year. i am not sure what to expect. and after reading some info about Hydroxycut, i think it is too risky. however, the question is.. Is whey protein OK? since i take it 9 hours after my Levo?

Djcn106,

Thyroglobulin has risen marginally but I was told that as long as Tg remains <6.0 and TSH <0.1 there is little likelihood of recurrence. I would certainly contact your endo prior to May or see whether your GP will increase dose.

I can't think there would be any interaction between whey protein and Levothyroxine after 9 hours. You can Google Levothyroxine + Whey Protein to check.

that result was last November & i have been taking the same dosage since i got my total thyroidectomy (as what my specialist said, everything looks fine so you should still continue with your current dosage, me being clueless, said OK) despite the change of my TG & TSH in between Jan 2015 - Nov 2016. now that you mentioned it, i realized, i should get another specialist then. thank you
