Iim new here and looking for some advice!

I’ve got so many questions about workout supplements interacting with my levothyroxine. Can’t seem to find any definite answers anywhere.

I want to add BCAAs to my workout routine to support recovery and muscle generation. Does anyone know if this is safe to take with hypothyroidism and Levothyroxine?

If anyone knows any pre workout supplement that does not interact with hypothyroidism and Levothyroxine I am looking for information on that as well.

I workout 5-6 days a week, just started with a new PT who’s killing me (love it btw)! I add whey protein shakes and creatine to my normal whole food diet to support my workouts. Both of which I understand are safe and won’t jnteract with Levothyroxine (I’m on 125mcg/day).

Would appreciate any guidance, links to articles, advice anyone may have to share.

Thanks all!

Pardon my ignorance but what is BCAA?

Branched chain amino acids

Hi Make sure you take you thyroid medication well away from consuming both protein drinks and BCAAs .

Your training shouldn’t interfere with medication just be sure to keep a record on how your feeling body function wise ! Also listen to your body with regards to exhaustion and needing rest .

Make sure your PT is aware of your Hypothyroidism and understands what it is .

Don’t consume any iodine or Green tea . Check the labels of your supplements for both .

I hope this helps you

Thank you for this.

I have at least 2 hours between the two.

Is it safe to say that as long as I keep medicine and supplements far apart it shouldn’t be a problem? Or is that too much of a blanket approach in your experience?

I recall somebody having problems with the workout supplement Anvarol and their endo thought it had caused their hypo and told them to stop taking it.

I’ve just checked the ingredients and it has BCAA not sure if this relevant

Anvarol contains soy protein. BCAA doesn't. :)

Oh I did forget to mention soy . Soya isn’t recommended either avoid .

soy = NO NO NO!!

Personally I would leave four hours as your using protein powder . It would be wise to set your alarm for 4am take your tablet in one go with water then go back to sleep.

But that depends on your workout schedule! What time do you workout ?

What time do you take your suppliments ?

Do you use green tea White tea or black tea too

Thanks for some good feedback!

I take my meds at 5am, I work out at 6am normally. I wouldn’t have any supplements before 7am.

I used to have an alarm at 3am for my medicine - girlfriend didn’t enjoy it too much though so had to stop!

To be honest I haven’t felt any difference from taking my protein + creatine on my current schedule.

I suppose it’s more about if I should or shouldn’t take BCAAs at all.

I drink some tea nowhere close to my meds though. Coffee on the other hand I usually have around 2.5-3 hrs after meds.

You might not feel any difference taking your protein an hour after your thyroid meds yet but you may do when it's too late and your meds stop working . Protein can bind to thyroid molecules making them impossible to get into the cells that's why I suggested taking your thyroid meds at 4am . The longer you can leave the gap in-between protein & thyroid medication the better chance you will have in your well-being. That includes dairy , green tea black tea mate tea granade coffee any kind of stimulants .

Maybe if you explain to your girlfriend why you have to set your alarm she'll be forgiving . Get your phone alarm set for 4am or even take your thyroid meds on an empty stomach before bed as long as you haven't eaten for 4hours drunk coffee eaten protein or drunk a shake to give It a good chance to get working.

You might have to tweak it to suit you.
