I know its not Thyroid related .

But i wanted personal answers . I started taking a 2.5 dose on Thursday and after being warned about the side effects by the gp and the pharmacist i thought they were over reacting but Damn that tickle/ scratch in back of my throat is so annoying ...

Does it go away ??

Do i really have to change again ..

Been taking it for 5 years or so, 10mg a day, no side effects.

I did have a tickly cough for a while when I first started taking it but have been on 10mg for about ten years now and no side effects. I'd give it a few weeks to settle before changing. Good luck!

They swapped me from amlodipine because it was playing havoc with my gums ..

I have a kidney function test in 3 weeks so will give it till then i think .

I had the Ramipril cough, it drove me mad, especially at night. I have now changed to Losartan and after a few weeks transition period, no more coughing :)

I have just changed to this after being on Felodipine for some time. I thought I was experiencing side-effects but not a cough, although things seem to have settled down now on my 2nd week so maybe takes time to settle down?

Xjjx I am glad you brought up this topic. I am sorry to hear about ramipril and bothersome side effects. I was prescribed bisoprolol because my cholesterol was up (apparently hypothyroidism can be one cause of this), had palpitations, we know hypothyroidism can be one cause of palpitations. New directives indicated me at risk so was prescribed statins and anisotropic by GP.

What a journey! Got muscle fatigue and dry cough -tickle you describe worse at night. Back to GP. Informed statins side effect. Had those changed more statins. As much as I complained nothing done about throat and cough. Muscle pains persisted.

Time passed. Developed 3 herniated discs lower back and extremely painful sciatica. Prescribed codeine 8/500 and gabapentin. Collapsed. Taken to hospital. All meds stopped. Adverse reaction to new meds. Withdrawal to codeine prescribed for agonising sciatica disc pain. 2years on, still see many consultants. Now diagnosed sjogrens syndrome. I believe all down to iatrogenics - unnecessary statins and unnecessary antihypertensives. Refused statins after my own thorough research. Now got consultant letter I am not deemed at risk without statins. I have researched bisoprolol and am currently having GP monitoring of bp with view to stop them.

My mouth, throat, cough still cause me daily and nightly distress. Sjogrens diagnosis underlines this symptom very highly. I know mouth problems began on bisoprolol (GP would not listen, accept or do anything about it). After collapse my bp did actually fluctuate very low - very high therefore had no choice to continue as my body (according to pharmacist had been assaulted).

Hypothyroidism diagnosed 27 years no problems managing. Preventative, at risk guideline meds, appear to have destabilized my system. I do not believe my thyroid is fully back to where it was so I am researching daily how to help myself back to stability in health status. Thanking everyone on here and thyroid UK. I am beginning to feel empowered again despite being unwell.

The above is purely a reflection of my journey. Many people are very happy and benefit on the above prescribed drugs. I was coerced into taking meds I did not want and probably did not need. Trusting my GP and government health guidelines, has cost me an active happy life, and through ill health from these experiences, I am having to learn to forgive myself. I did not follow my own real gut instinct. This, I intend to change.

Good luck with your journey. Whatever you decide, make sure you make an objective view. My experience is very subjective. Do not do as I do have done.

Thank you for opening discussion on antihypertensives-hypothyroidism links. I hope others will get involved in this interesting topic.
