How much magnesium did you take and what kind of supplement are you using? Magnesium citrate? Oxide? Orotate? Sprays? Epsom salts in the bath?

Do you take any other supplements?

Also, do you have known kidney problems?

Was taking magnesium citrate 100mg, and chelated magnesium 100mg, 1at lunch time 1at tea. no known kidney probs. had kidney function checked as part of annual health check recently and all fine (not just "normal"), occasionally dead sea mineral salts in bath and if having aches and pains after gardening use mag. oil spray, although my kidney function o. k. some members of family had probs. and 2 died with renal failure . However reasonable age and something would have got them sooner or later!..Don't take any other supps.

Thanks for reply

Perhaps you could try some other forms of magnesium. There are lots available.

I looked for side effects of taking magnesium and, apart from people with severe kidney problems having to avoid it, I can't find anything much on the subject.

I'm wondering if taking magnesium is somehow highlighting a problem with some other mineral or vitamin level in your body.

This link may give you some clues :

Everything I've read about magnesium suggests that practically everyone is deficient and the risks of side effects are very low. So I'm stumped, sorry.

Incidentally, to avoid cramps, spasms, and muscle tension in myself, the three things that I need at good levels are iron, magnesium, and potassium. Potassium supplementation can be dangerous, but I only supplement very tiny amounts, and it isn't something people should take just for the hell of it.

Thanks, agree that almost everyone is deficient in mag. etc. - -I was wondering about the iron as although my levels are "in range" has dropped a bit from last year, I am using a spray (iron boost) as I find tablets difficult, potassium level good. to be truthful I am a bit stumped too, usually can find ways to sort as gp not really bothered (surprise, surprise)

Cramps not so bad at the moment so maybe something is working!!!

Hi there, when I started out on my thyroid journey and started testing stuff I found I was low in mag. The usual protocol for increasing mag is to use several different ways to supplement. Not citrate, which is not good for your ceruloplasmin. Oxide is the cheapest, but the body cannot use it very well. I use mag glycinate, mag oil, epsom salts in bath sometimes, or footbath. Yes I take other supplements too. The place where I got all my info was here facebook.com/groups/Magnesi... they are very knowledgeable. My test results show increasing mag but still on the low side. Have found that my leg cramps, eye tics and headaches have all but gone now I am taking MAg. Good luck x

I always find that Magnesium helps alleviate muscle cramps. If I don't take it I get pains and tightness in my shoulders and legs. Sometimes it makes writing or typing impossible. You will know if you take too much as you will get a stomach upset. It's really important to take a form of magnesium that your body can easily absorb.

I'm taking 225mg a day but I had to build up to that dose. It's called Poliquin Ubermag PX. Consists of Elemental Magnesium 75mg (from magnesium glycinate, fumarate, taurate, and orotate).

You can also bathe in magnesium salts if you find it hard to absorb.

Thanks, will check your recommendation and enjoy relaxing in salts.
