Mouth ulcers

Hi All,

Newbie here....

I've been diagnosed with Hashimotos but with a working thyroid, but due to symptoms have been put on a low dose of thyroxine 25mg since April. Since July I have had mouth ulcers every week I was wondering is there a link between thyroxine and mouth ulcers?

Thanks in advance for any replies

Hey Tina2788 welcome

I got mouth ulcers before I was diagnosed. They were peculiar in that I'd never had mouth ulcers before and I'd have two or three on the go all at once, not in mouth ulcer type places. Very painful. You can get all sorts of things to help. I found Corsodyl toothpaste and mouthwash a boon.

Calmed down once I started to feel better, some while after diagnosis. Stick with it. Early days. It will have taken a while for your antibodies to creep up and will take a long time for them to go back down again ( if at all, before your thyroid packs up...) so long as you are on this tiny dose. How are your bloods looking ? Has your GP just left you on 25mcg and not investigated further ? How are you feeling ?

Thanks so much for your reply.

I have a multi nodule goitre and my endo sent for my thyroid to be removed, upon more tests they diagnosed me with Hashimotos, so decided to leave it in and treat with medication.

My main symptoms are the brain fog as I've seen it described and tiredness, these have eased since starting the medication.

My latest bloods show my thyroid is currently up and running as should be, I'm due an appointment next month so may mention the mouth ulcers.

You should have had a blood test six weeks after starting the 25 mcg - a very conservative dose, to say the least - and your dose increased to 50 mcg. It is counter-productive to stay on a starter dose for too long - especially when you have Hashi's. So, go and ask your doctor for a blood test very soon. And, also ask him to test your vit D, vit B12, folate and ferritin. Mouth ulcers can often be due to nutritional deficiencies. And most hypos have nutritional deficiencies. :)

Thank you grey goose, I will definetly be mentioning your points.

Something over-the-counter I've discovered recently that helps with the pain of mouth ulcers is "Ultra Chloroseptic Anaesthetic Throat Spray". It comes in four flavours.

ultrachloraseptic.co.uk/pro...

I bought it a few days ago from the non-Pharmacy shelves at Tesco.

Because it is a throat spray it isn't actually the easiest thing in the world to apply to mouth ulcers, but if you are in a lot of pain at 2am it is the easiest thing I've found to use when getting out of bed is just too much of a hassle.

I've never managed to use things like Bonjela because I seem to be allergic to one of the ingredients in them, I don't know what it is. If I try them I end up almost screaming in pain.

If you can get your doctor to prescribe them, there is an alternative which not only reduces pain but speeds up healing and that is betamethasone 500mcg soluble tablets. You have to dissolve a tablet in about 10ml of water. When it has completely dissolved it is used as a mouthwash (spit don't swallow) after cleaning your teeth.

medicines.org.uk/emc/PIL.29...

I'm not sure if it is an official use or is off-label. I was prescribed it by a consultant.

For reducing the severity of mouth ulcers I found vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin) has been helpful, but it did make things worse for some weeks before it made things better.

I had mouth ulcers as a child. They disappeared when I started smoking as a teenager. I almost never got them again, or they were very minor, until I stopped smoking in my late 40s. Then the mouth ulcers came back as if they'd never been away, and if anything, they are worse than they were when I was a child. I've never managed to eliminate them since. That was 7 - 8 years ago.

Do you get the ulcers anywhere else as well as the mouth?

Hi,

Just in my mouth (in non biteable places).

Did you test positive for Hashi antibioties? I'm wondering because ALL of my bloodwork is normal. My thyroid is slight-moderate enlarged with diffuse nodules, too small to do a FNA. I get terrible canker sores that last forever. Hair thinning, exhaustion, dry skin, anxiety etc. My Endo said it wouldn't hurt me to try a low dose of Armour thyroid. I also take vit D & folic acid supplement for MTHFR gene. Im weaning off an antidepressant that never worked and this is hell, so I'm afraid to put something else in my body until this current poison is out of my system.

Hi,

I did have raised anti bodies at the beginning of the year, but I've only had 1 blood work done since then for anti bodies and I don't know that outcome till next month I'm afraid, but all my other thyroid tests have been normal, it was an ultra sound that confirmed my Hashimotos.

Hope you start to feel better soon.

I go through phases of having mouth ulcers and suspected it might be cross contamination (I'm gluten free). When they appear, I chew cloves. It's not pleasant but seems to work well.

Hi!

Yes I was plagued by the wretched things as I became more and more poorly with untreated overt hypothyroidism. They have pretty much gone away now I am properly medicated and feel well again. I took levothyroxine initially and felt like pants even after two years so switched to NDT which suits me much better. Yes I'd say the ulcers are related but not sure of the machinations there will be someone here who will know why It happens.
