Hello does anyone else or us there any link between hashimotos and mouth ulcers and cold sores. I suffer terribly from both. Particularly if I've drank too much alcohol or run down or have pmt. My mouth ulcers can be terrible and struggle to eat/drink. It normally happens after damaging my mouth slightly initially from just eating but then it gets really really sore shouting 2 days later. Also I sore a post saying about hashimotos and inflammation. What can you do to reduce inflammation? I've had underactive thyriod for years but only just been told its hashimotos.

Low B12, low folate, and low iron and ferritin (iron stores) can increase the risk of and the severity of mouth ulcers. Be aware that the ulcers may get worse (temporarily) before they get better if you improve B12/folate/iron/ferritin.

I use toothpaste with no SLS - sodium laurel sulphate - and no fluoride, and I use this mouthwash after brushing :

mouth ulcers can be a feature of celiac disease. Might be worth getting tested if you haven’t already.

Hi I did do of those home testing kits and it came back negative but I do think I have intolerance to gluten. If I eat a lot of carbs I feel like I've drank a bottle of wine next day! Thank you.

Next steps

Get vitamin levels tested

Get coeliac blood test BEFORE considering trial on strictly gluten free diet

Thank you so much for replies. I got a coeliac test from superdrug and did a finger prick test and it said I wasn't coeliac. My vitamin levels are all with range according to GP but to me my iron looked literally just within range.

A coeliac test being negative doesn't necessarily mean you don't have coeliac.coeliac.org.uk/information-...

Please get a copy of your vitamin results which you are legally entitled to, then post them on a new post for members to comment. Highly likely you have less than optimal vitamin levels.

Also gluten sensitivity or intolerance may not show up on any blood test. Worth trying a strictly gluten free diet regardless of tests.

I live in France and the dentistry here is not good. I use soda toothpaste which is gentle. I also used garlic water every day as a rinse after brushing. 2 cloves crushed add warm water

then sieve. It lasts a week and stops any bacteria.

I used to get them a lot. They were about 1cm and would be on one side of my tongue for 2 weeks, the other side of my tongue for 2 weeks then I would have a week of respite. My GP wasn't interested but my dentist referred me to the dental hospital and prescribed benzydamine mouthwash to numb my mouth long enough to be able to eat and drink.

The dental hospital weren't that much help.

I don't eat gluten and B12 levels are fine. I tried different toothpastes and cut back on salt and it seems to have helped.

Good luck.

Hi, Mouth ulcers were a regular feature in my life until approx two years ago. I had a deep cleanse by a Periodontist, followers the advice to us Tipee brushes nightly, use sensitive toothpaste and I have had no reoccurrence. I think it might have been bacteria caused with residual food stuck between the teeth that neither brushing or flossing was getting rid of. I cannot say with certainty but I am over the moon not to get them anymore.

I used to get terrible ulcers, never seemed to be without them, but them I started by chance having marmite and peanut butter on toast, strangely I noticed my ulcers were gone, so I started having a teaspoon of Marmite and smooth peanut butter every day ! Not had an ulcer since, I think the salt in peanut butter and the vitamins n the Marmite stop them forming...Try it !

This doesn't answer your question, but thought I would share what helped me for anyone who is suffering from mouth sores as well.

About every 4 months, the entire inside of my mouth was raw and I was getting canker sores so bad I couldn't eat, talk and eventually my entire face swelled up (this quick description does not give my suffering justice btw). I have seen all kinds of doctors and haven't gotten a cause. It felt like a type of thrush, but the medication for that didn't really help and was super painful to swish in my mouth. I was tested for allergies, because of the severe swelling in my mouth and face and no allergies. I do get cold sores, but I didn't think it was related. They did test a sore and didn't find any of the Herpes virus in it (maybe the sore was too new or clean?), BUT I was prescribed antivirals and that has helped! I took them daily for months, even though I was through the break out and I didn't have an episode as I should have (at the 4 month mark). Its been a year since my last episode. I'm currently fighting an episode, I don't think its progressing any further at this moment and it hasn't gotten too bad (only 5 mild canker sores and a cold sore lol). Along with the antiviral, the thing that has helped the most is an antiseptic mouth wash, but it must be antiseptic. That brings me more relief than the lidocaine or anything else my doctor has prescribed. I agree with #humanbean, your tooth paste is super important and I have found that certain toothpastes will exacerbate the issue after just 1 use. Also Oraswift lozenges help a bit and feel like they help me heal too, but they're pretty expensive online. I got gum with xylitol in it and I notice that my canker sores calm down and feel less irritated and painful after a minute or so. I literally have a small bag I carry everywhere with me, its my emergency bag with prescriptions, pastes, lozenges, everything. These episodes are so painful and debilitating that I don't go anywhere without my bag in fear that it will progress any farther than it has to.

If your occurs after drinking or when you're run down, sounds like its tied to your immune system, which may indicate its viral. Good luck to anyone who goes through anything like this.

Hi I found your reply very helpful. Thank you. I few years ago I was very run down due to personal relationship going very badly. And I drank a bottle of wine, after not drinking for a while, and I was sick. When I was sick I really damaged my throat. 2 days later it started to get sore and the pain. It was horrible. I couldn't see it because it was very low in my throat but I could barely eat and drink and I felt so ill with it. But also have tried anti virals which seems to help but surely the herpes virus wouldn't cause sores on my throat? But I do have the anti viral as my cold sores can become frequent. But time my throat was sore I wasn't taking them. Is it just because I have hashimotos, which private Dr said I have, and my immune system is just bad? Like you say drinking obviously, which I know but try to forget as I like drinking, lowers my immune system. I also had results from test that said I've intolerant to cows milk! So cutting that out as well!!!

I stopped getting mouth ulcers after I cut out gluten. I have Hashimoto's and have tested negative for coeliac disease but have a gluten intolerance.

Apparently low zinc levels can cause mouth and stomach ulcers, perhaps ask your GP to check (say your dentist suggested it 😉)

A recent discovery of mine, that I've found helpful against my ulcers is this :

amazon.co.uk/Pack-Health-Pr...

It's a spray that I squirt on any active ulcers usually after cleaning my teeth morning and night, but sometimes during the day as well when my pain levels are high. It seems to have a pain killing effect, and also seems to shrink ulcers more quickly than they would disappear normally, and helps to reduce their life span.

I just searched for mouth ulcers and found this thread. I too am suffering from mouth ulcers and cold sores if I slightly damage the skin. So painful! I’m struggling to eat/drink. I’m awaiting blood test results to see if my B12 & D has improved. I will try some of the tips.
