Hi, my name is Hannah. Im 32 and had thyroidectomy 4 years ago. im on levotyroksine 125 mg.since then Ive gain 15 kg(around 2,3 stone).weigh gain is not my biggest problem. endo is saying im biochemicaly euthyroid but my symptoms are like hypothyroid, tired ,really foggy brain, no energy whatsoever, fell really down.becouse of this ive lost 2 jobs and dont know what to do next, so my hussband is looking after everythig,i fell so sorry for him and my children. for me is constant battle to feel better but nothing helps. so I decided to rise my 125 to 150 and after a week ive started feeling better.started reading about hormons find this page and I fell so cheated by doctors.decided to self medicate myslef . So I went to gp she wanted give me antydepresants and saying that not all my problems are becuse of thyroid hormones.Ive asked for blood test, she gave me one but only for TSH and T4 as she is not allowed to send me for T3. Results came TSH 2.83(0.35-5.5) and T4 13.7(10.0 -19.8). im march tsh was 0.02 t4 18.8.and I ve felt a lot better.

Lately started exercising and read that I while exercising your body needs more hormones. Has anyone of you have any experience with this? Well I do feel better on 150 mg.

So tomorrow im going to see my Endo. not sure if he helps me as he looks only on blood test results. and told me one that to loose weight I need to be on low calorie diet which I read is not helping to loose weight with my condition.

So im writing here asking for your opinion.

Many thanks for reading this post

I immediately see the cause of you not feeling well. Your TSH is too HIGH. Also I feel so sorry for you as you've had a thyroidectomy and only given levothyroxine, when T3 is the active hormone required in our billions of receptor cells. Levothyroxine is inactive and it converts to T3 but not if we have insufficient and also some of us don't convert efficiently to T3.

We have to read and learn. You can get a Private Free T3 blood test from one of our recommended labs and you get a small discount if you quote Thyroiduk's code number.

When you have a test for thyroid hormones it should be the earliest possible, and fasting, and also allow about 24 hours from your last dose of levo and the test and take it afterwards.

Many doctors make the big mistake of not allowing our TSH to be 1 or lower and give us extra prescripts for the 'clinical symptom' rather than a decent dose of hormones.

I shall give you some links and your husband is doing a sterling job because he knows you well and that you are unwell. Anyone who hasn't been through the mill with their thyroid gland dysfunction, cannot appreciate how unwell we can be.

Don't exercise yet because it reduces your T3 and the brain has the most receptor cells and you need the energy.

(I am not medically qualified but have hypothyroidism which was undiagnosed and unmedicated for a long time).

I am well now.

I'm so sorry to hear of your problems and can assure you you are not alone in gaining weight on levothyroxine especially as you are not properly optimised .i put on 3 stone felt absolutely dreadful, lost my job and was told my problems were nothing to do with hypo or levothyroxine but were all in my head - it was complete Tommy rot. I switched to NDT went gluten free and took vitamin D3 and miraculously morphed back to the person I had been - weight went, the depression evaporated. I retrained and now have a job and a new career I absolutely love. I would feel very unwell with a TSH of 2.8 it is far too high for optimum health. This illness really takes it out of us and how can we be expected to function properly if our finely tuned body clock is not allowed to tick at its natural rate? It is goes against our true nature, small wonder we continue to feel unwell. You can't convert the food you are eating now into the energy you need because you don't have enough hormones to run this process smoothly and efficiently. Eating less will just slow you down even more.

The Anthony Toft advice which is on one of the main pages here would be worth taking along to your endo to try and get your dose of thyroxine elevated and the aim to be to get lyour TSH down below 1. I will try and find it and post it here

I fear it will too late for your appointment

Thank you for you lovely comments.

I went to see my end on Wednesday and was so afraid that he will say all the same rubbish as always. But its a mirracle I would say.he said that my TSH is to high and he wanted to raised my dosage to 150.but I stared to talk about T3 and T4 that there ate test that for people with total thyroidectomy is better and even blood test results were fine in the past I still had symptoms of being hypothyroid.he mention something about placebo effect but he asked me if I want to try that combination. I was in big shock. And so happy. But you cannot believe what happened next.In pharmacy lady told me that that medication is not longer available for many years.my endo wrote down wrong old name for T3 so I had to go back to him again. He gave me that medicine for 2,weeks only and said that my GP will continue prescription. So at the moment I'm on 100mg T4 and 10mg T3.

Is that normal while talking T3 going to toilet every day.or maybe I'm so used to be constipated and now is so strange for me looooolllll.
