Hi,

Please can someone private message me with details how to get thyroxine (t4) without a prescription? Can't get help on NHS, tsh is 3.5 and have all the symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Thanks in advance

Someone will respond. I just want to say that a T3 of 3.5 plus symptoms should be treated as it would be in other countries. In the UK, the guidelines state that 10 is the magic number to produce a prescription. Many doctors trained pre 60's prescribed on a trial basis and one doctor, now dead, said that patients were in a parlous situation.

Thank you, hopefully someone will respond. Do you mean TSH? I have all the symptoms, tried convincing NHS doctors many times told its CFS and POTS syndrome.

Go by your instinct. We can have clinical symptoms but remain undiagnosed due to the TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) which is from the pituitary gland and have read that sometimes we can have clinical symptoms with the result of CFS etc because TSH doesn't reach 10.

Look down the left-hand colum, and click on symptoms etc. This is also an excerpt from Thyroiduk.

I will, we know our own bodies the best and when somethings not right. I'll start on 50mcg and work up to 100mcg as I've seen people on here doing and see how I go. Thanks for your help, its a great site for so many.

Allow at least six weeks between each increase. This doctor had the right idea.

Suggest you ask GP to check levels of vitamin d, b12, folate and ferratin. These all need to at good (not just average) levels for your thyroid hormones to work in your cells.

Also have you had thyroid antibodies checked? There are two sorts TPO Ab and TG Ab. (Thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin) Both need checking, if either, or both are high this means autoimmune thyroid - called Hashimoto's - most common cause of being hypo. NHS rarely checks TPO and almost never checks TG.

Make sure you get the actual figures from tests (including ranges - figures in brackets). You are entitled to copies of your own results. Some surgeries make nominal charge for printing out. Alternatively you can now ask for online access to your own medical records. Though not all surgeries can do this yet, or may not have blood test results available yet online, but all should be doing this with couple of years.

When you get results suggest you make a new post on here and members can offer advise on any vitamin supplements needed

If you can not get GP to do these tests, then like many of us, you can get them done privately

Blue Horizon - Thyroid plus eleven tests all these.

This is an easy to do fingerprick test you do at home, post back and they email results to you couple of days later. Usual advice on this test, is to do early in morning, no food or drink beforehand (other than water).

have you had your thyroid properly tested?

Thank you for you comments. I have had them done:

B12 883 211-911

Ferritin 53 10-322

Folate 14.0 5.4-24.0

Vitamin D 107 60-150

I have been supplementing Iron, Vitamin D, B12 as these were all very low before supplementing.

I've had the TPO antibodies tested 3 times, 2 at doctors were just blank on results printed out no range. GP said they were negative, and one at endocrinologist:

TPO 47 < 100

I've seen other ranges for TPO and some labs say over 35 is positive so not sure about this one? Endocrinologist said it was depression, even my daily palpitations were normal according to him!

GP will only test TSH as she says labs won't do others and I can't afford private ones as I had to give up my job recently. Here's the ones I have:

Jul 2000 TSH1.33 0.5-5

Nov 2006 TSH 1.8 0.2-6.0

Aug 2012 TSH 3.37 0.34-5.6

March 2014 TSH 0.20 0.34-5.6 Serum free T4 12.0 7.5-21.1 (after virus)

July 2014 TSH 2.93

August 2014 TSH 3.41

November 2014 TSH 3.1 Serum free T3 4.28 3.0-5.0 ( range seem rather low?)

February 2015 3.5 0.5-4.0.

I've been getting increasingly tired and ill as the years have gone by. Have high cholesterol, low blood pressure and slow pulse at rest- 55bpm.

My mum, sister and auntie have primary hypothyroidism. I was diagnosed CFS December 2014 and POTS February 2015. I'm 30 and feel ninety. Just want my life back, given up on NHS and trying sort it out myself.

This site is so great for people who are suffering poor treatment from NHS doctors.

So the TGab needs testing. Sounds like it will be positive.

Might be worth reading The Magnesium Miracle. Not thyroid related book. But is critically important mineral. When supplementing Vit D it is recommended we also take magnesium. I found that adding magnesium stopped my palpitations. Apparently we excrete excess (like Vit C) so most can tolerate it. But if any kidneys issues, magnesium is not recommended.

Should also take vitamin K2 is taking Vit D - the K2 helps the increased levels of calcium go into bones where it should be.

I would agree with Aspmama .....get your TGAb checked

Also, when taking B12, we should also take good quality Vit B complex ( eg Thorne's basic B). This would improve your folate levels too

Thanks Slow Dragon, yes I have started taking magnesium the last month 400mg magnesium citrate. My serum magnesium was 0.75 (0.7-1.0) and I had 24hr urine magnesium test a while back at the hospital, that was over the range 7.44 (2.40-6.50) so I guess i must use a lot of magnesium. Do get anxiety sometimes which does seem better since the magnesium.

I do take Nutri adrenal extra which has high strength b vitamins in, is that ok?
