I went to my local Polish deli, only about five years after they opened! Came home with sauerkraut - both fresh and bottled, gherkins (proper ones!) rollmops (they have several varieties) and salmon ham.
I am a very happy bunny!

In Holland we used to mix sauerkraut with mashed potato and serve it with a warmed smoked pork sausage. It was a very tasty winter warmer which was fantastic to come home to after a long day's skating on local farmer's flooded fields when I was young. Have revived this favourite meal since being able to get sauerkraut in Tesco's and it brings back memories of a time when I could spend hours doing something very energetic without even tiring slightly... I normally warm both the sausage and a portion of sauerkraut in a steamer, with the potatoes boiling on the pan below. Then I chop the sausage up, mash the potatoes and mix it all together, curl up on the sofa and watch something good on TV whilst eating it. Lovely!!!
