There are loads of different iron supplements that people tolerate to varying degrees. What kind(s) have you been prescribed or tried?

pbrain What does the Patient Information Leaflet say about when to take them? Sometimes meds are suggested to be taken with meals in order to reduce the chance of tummy upset, but if that doesn't affect you - and the PIL doesn't say they must be taken with meals - then it should be OK for you to take them at night. However, if you are prescribed more than one a day it should be in divided doses.

Fizzy vitamin C tablets may not contain enough Vit C, it ideally should be 1000mg, and they usually contain other things you don't really need. Why not use a Vit C powder, this is the one I use amazon.co.uk/dp/B004F1NF98/... it works out at less than 4p for 1000mg, I mix with some orange juice, it dissolves quite easily.

I'm not sure how much iron is in Floradix bit it won't be anywhere near the amount in your prescribed tablets and it will be a lot more expensive.

If you are iron deficient Floradix doesn't have enough iron in it to make a difference.

One thing you haven't said is how many you are taking a day and what particular supplements you are taking.

Sometimes just taking one less per day is enough to sort out issues.

I do personally take one dose at night just so I can fit in all my medications with enough gaps. Other people can't because they take medications then which interact with iron.

I'm in n 210 twice a day. Was thinking I'll do evening and lunch time...such an exciting life I have. Yes I'm on thyroxine and have digestion probs already.. Thanks for your reply..

Are you on thyroxine supplementation? If so, iron binds to the thyroxine and prevents conversion/absorption. Ferrous sulphate is worse than ferrous fumarate. Try switching to ferrous fumarate at a smaller dose and leave 6 full hours between iron dose and thyroxine dose. This works for me. Good luck.

14 mg is recommended daily allowance. How much have you been prescribed?

14mg is the recommended daily allowance for healthy people to take in via food and/or supplements to maintain their levels. It won't do a thing for many people with thyroid problems who don't absorb iron very well.

I used ferrous fumarate to raise my iron levels. I was taking a high dose which was 3 x 210mg ferrous fumarate i.e. one tablet, three times a day. This contained 207mg of elemental iron.

Vit b does not agree with me either. Synthetic vitamins are an unknown quantity. It worries me that bread and flour products are fortified and we don' t know what with. Try a food state supplement. The body recognises it as food and absorbs it as such. I am fine with food state. Nature's own and together vitamins are two that i know of. I took nature's own b12 and my level went up so quickly the Doctor called to see what i had taken.

Hope this helps
