Can anyone recommend a good book I can read about hypothyroidism, I have been on Levothyroxine for 11 years. My TSH has been pretty stable around 1 or just under for a long time but has recently gone up during a 6 month period to 2.9.

I also have coeliac disease and pernicious anaemia and have always seen these things as the cause of my symptoms ie neuro pains, facial paraesthesia. difficulty swallowing and fatigue.

Recently my GP retired and the practice has been taken over by a larger group, they now no longer do tests for T3/T4, only TSH. I m thinking that I need to know more about thyroid issues and if anyone knows a good book I can read I would be very grateful.

Dr Barry Peatfields book, "Your thyroid and how to keep it healthy". Is an easy read which explains fairly well.

If you want to understand how T3, T4, and TSH work together, then I'd highly recommend Tired Thyroid by Barbara Lougheed. Good explanation for the layman, with references you can share with your doctor.

I would get a private FT4 and FT3 blood test done from one of the recommended labs. I would assume your T3 is low and we need it towards the upper part of the level as it is the active hormone required by our billions of receptor cells. If we don't have sufficient we cannot function.

If you have a print-out of your results with the ranges that would be helpful for comments to be made.

I would also recommend that some T3 be added to your T4. Your doctor may be reluctant as they've been told levo only, on the assumption that we ALL do fine on it but that's not the case as I personally found out and am now well. You can source it yourself for a trial if GP refuses.

I am not medically qualified but I think a test before you take T3 as then you have an idea what your result is before you begin. Thereafter it's based on how you feel, rather than a blood test result.

Izabella Wentz 'Hashimoto's Thyroditis' is very good as well especially if you happen to have Hashimoto's as well. Have you ever been tested for antibodies?

No I was never tested for thyroid antbodies as far as I know ...to be honest I don t know a lot about blood tests. I have had the DNA Antibodies test which was positive at 23 . I suppose after being treated for 11 years it doesn't really make much difference now.
