Magnesium & frequent urinating

Hello to everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced constantly running to the loo to pass urine after having recently started using magnesium oil. I also take vitamin D & K2.

I know of no link between magnesium and frequent urination. If anything one would expect the opposite as magnesium can relax the smooth muscle in the bladder and detrusor muscle which allows more urine to be stored and hence less frequent urination. I'm not familiar with magnesium oil, perhaps there is something else in it that might cause problems. If it carries on try discontinuing the oil for a few days and then resuming it to confirm the link with the magnesium oil.

Thanks for your reply Jimh111. I started using magnesium oil a few days ago & it it all happened at the same time, so I think there could be a link. Will stop it for a few days & see what happens.

I've recently started mixing magnesium citrate with a small amount of water and take it like that. I've had no problem with frequent urination. I've certainly increased energy and less brain fog since being on it.

It's early days so far but around one-quarter of a teaspoon put into water. Can put other drink in to make more palatable but it's ok tastewise. It's made stools softer.... a video I watched said the test is if you get diarrhoea it's too much... so experiment. x

Yes I found that problem too, they made me wretch! The spray is better but still causing me trouble.

I have been trying to do the same, but when I mix it, it just forms a lump at the bottom of the glass which is really unpalatable to take.

Am I doing something wrong or is that just what happens?

I've never had that problem.. I put the water in first then tip in the powder.

If you heat the water up first, it should dissolve and not create such a lump...i use to drink mine as a hot tea at night. Easier to digest that way as well...

Thanks Marigold for your reply. I can't tolerate citrate, it goes straight through me which is why I opted for the spray. I read it can be some kind of detoxification process, at least I hope so as I'm developing other symptoms now!

Natural calm magnesium powder is good -just mix with dash of hot water and add more cold water to dilute to taste.

Re-Mag very good - if more expensive. Liquid mag - just dilute to taste. Seems to upset bowels less.

Thanks for your reply slowdragon. I might look into this if I don't get any peace as it's driving me mad! I've been through so many different types of magnesium - citrate which went straight through me, Glycinate which made me feel awful & the first spray I bought gave me a rash so it's a bit of a minefield!

The spray can sometimes.givr you a rash or itch but only for the first few times

Especially on dry skin As it's a salt (!) But otherwise great for reliving pain and acjces and cramps

I also had magensium citrate at night as don't like the sticky feeling of oil all the time

Magensium is also an electrolyte so maybe it's causing a slight imbalance with sodium and other minerals and you are not retaining As much water hence trips to loo.

I've found that I really have problems with so many supplements that I just stick to the ones I can tolerate. I've completely abandoned the magnesium route now because of all the trouble it caused in the end, & just stick to Vit D & K2. I think I'm just one of those types that has difficulty tolerating certain things!

Give yourself a break to see if it really is the magensium

But you may just need a very small amount and maybe build up if you do tolerate it

A small amount will probably do the world of good rather than abandoning completely. Or eat foods rich in magensium as a more natural route

I do get OCC digestive issues and other symptoms but the benefits from magensium.have been so life changing I would never give it up completely or for others around me

yes if i take b4 bed, the next morning i go alot more when if first wake up..it is obvious i am not holding as much water....magn has over 300 uses in the body so it is good for the body as long as your dont have excessive elimination which could interfere with vitamin absorption

Thanks for your reply jacrjacr. It is driving me mad at the moment, I've got a headache as well. I only started using the oil on Saturday & am hoping it's just temporary as I've read it can be detoxifying the body.

drinks lot of water fluid since dehydration causes headaches....i noticed mine with capsules, the mag oil i use too but i dont use alot....you may have to dilute the oil with a carrier oil or water...

but i use full strenght mag oil too by health and wisdom

Thanks for your reply foxglove. I've only just started using the magnesium oil & it's a total nightmare. I want to go all the time. Hopefully it will settle down. I read that it detoxifies the body to start with so keeping my fingers crossed.

Hello Mirzaa, I must admit I didn't get over the problems I had with magnesium. I tried citrate, glycinate & the transdermal spray, but I had dreadful side effects. It got so bad that I stopped using it.The only reason I started supplementing was to help absorb vit D, but managed without it in the end.I hope you have better luck than I did.If your symptoms persist, it might be better to get your mg levels tested to see if you need it. The best type of mg to have is supposed to be the transdermal spray- gives the least amount of side effects. Hope this has helped.

Hi. Sorry this is probably ages after you actually posted this but I've suffered with frequent urination for 6 months or so when taking magnesium It got better but then I noticed it got bad again when I started back on the magnesium and finally put 2 abd 2 together. I just wondered if I could ask if the spray still had the same effect? As I noticed in your post you said some symptoms were better with the spray and I wondered if this included the urination?

Hi Tracy27,it's been quite a long time since I stopped using the magnesium spray so difficult to remember, but in my case by that point, the side effects had accumulated & were so bad that I stopped using the magnesium spray altogether. A lot of people find the spray much better than the tablets, so if you haven't tried it yet, give it a go for a week & see how you get on. It might suit you. Feel free to ask anything you want. Magnesium is not classified as a vitamin as B6 and C are, but rather is an electrolyte. No matter how it's labeled, magnesium is an essential nutrient that can cause you to urinate more frequently when you have large doses running through your body. A 1998 issue of the "Journal of Women's Health" reported that taking 200 mg of magnesium daily for approximately two months relieved women of child-bearing age of premenstrual water retention. The efficacy of the dietary supplement was measured by urinary output; women who took magnesium urinated more than those who did not take the mineral.

Thanks for your comments Bree72. The trouble with taking magnesium was that it caused excessive urination to the point where it became a nightmare. It also made me feel absolutely terrible, no matter in what form I took it, & so I was forced to stop.

I'm experiencing the issue you described in this post. Whenever I have magnesium supplement, I do have to urinate more frequently to the point I stay awake all night. Even small amounts of mag that come in other medications or supplements as filling ingredient or foods that has high amounts of mag will cause this issue to me. My question, do you know what is causing it to you? It might explain why I'm having it too!

Hi Ali1101, I must be honest, I don't know what's behind it. I think if you look back at my earlier posts & comments added to this thread, you might something that helps. One of the members gave an explanation. Maybe you should go to your Drs, as your level could be elevated? They should really look into it for you if you say almost anything with slight mag content makes you pass urine frequently. I had terrible trouble with it, not only the constant needing to go to the loo, but how bad it made me feel.I could barely stand up after a week but as soon as I stopped it, the symptoms ceased. I only took it to help absorption of vitamin D, but I managed perfectly well without & raised my levels on their own with just K2. Maybe it's not for everyone but I would get it looked into if it's that bad

YES! For a few years i was perfectly fine drinking it, until i developed some time of overactive bladder condition. So now I can't take ANY calcium magnesium in supplement form w/o having to urinate little bits at a time, sitting there for long periods of time just trying to get it all out. It is a mystery to me as to why calcium magensium does this...but if you google "why does calcium magnesium make me pee" a lot of links come up w/ info on numerous potential correlations and causes...like this one, that states that magnesium in larger doses CAN make you urinate more because it is an electrolyte: livestrong.com/article/2179...

Hi Cali03,

ah that might have something to do with it, but I can't explain why it made me feel so awful.

There's a lot of supplements I can't take, especially herbal ones & magnesium as well, however I've managed ok without.

Hello Loub37 ...

I have this problem with magnesium as well as many other supplements. I recently could link it to pituitary dysfunction. Yes, my hypothyroidism is secondary .. that's due to low TSH secretion from pituitary. So, it is possible that other hormones from pituitary are affected. I mean ADH hormone. Without this ADH, your body will not be able to retain water. When there is extra electrolytes or nutrition's (or poisons) that the body try to get rid off, it cannot retain the water in the kidney without sufficient amount of ADH.

Other possibility will be parathyroid dysfunction.

Hello Alli1101, thanks for your message, that's another interesting point. I don't think I've got any other problems, but I suppose it could warrant an investigation, the only problem is that getting an appointment at the Drs these days is almost impossible!

I did have constant urine infections as a child & I guess it could have caused some long term kidney problem that I have been unaware of until maybe now.

Hello. I know this was a long time ago, but I am having the same issues as you and thought I'd take the chance and ask. My doctor put me on magnesium due to deficiency since I have a lot of dietary restrictions. But pretty much a week after I started taking supplements I had to pee almost constantly, feeling the urge again almost instantly after I've been to the bathroom. This went on for eight weeks. I've since stopped taking the supplement and have seen a huge amount of improvement, no longer getting up 3-4 times to go the toilet at night but I was just wondering if you could tell me how long it took for your symptoms to settle after you stopped using the magnesium because I'm having a bad day again today and am feeling a little low.

Hi KittyKat1217, I did have a lot of problems with magnesium, but after stopping it, I think things returned to normal after about 24/48 hours. I know it was a fairly quick turnaround. Sometimes constant trips to the loo can be caused by other problems related to the kidneys. I have had a few days like that from time to time, but they usually go away on their own.

Hi KittyKat1217, I recently started taking 200 mg of Magnesium Glycinate in capsule form. I like how it relaxes me and I feel like it helps with my blood sugar, but oh boy does it ever make me have to urinate! Its like the longer I take it, night after night I have to go more. Last night I should have seriously just camped out there and tried to sleep. lol

Not funny, I know but it helps to have a sense of humor. I started it in the first place at the suggestion of Dr. Westin Childs, and I was having horrible hot flashes before I started taking it. They are gone now.

I also take D3 but not K2 and am hypothyroid due to radiation ablation.

I maybe will just try to take it a few nights per week and plan on getting up for a dozen trips to the the toilet

I am amazed at how fast I realized the two had to be connected, so I googled and here I am.

I'm wishing and wondering if there's a way to counteract this problematic side effect

I'm sorry you are dealing with this too and hope you find a solution. If I should find one I will post it here.
