Any advice on the best way to supply vitamin d ? My result for 25 OH Vitamin D came back as 16.55 Ng/ml while the normal range is 20-100. Your help is much appreciated.

Sunshine in the summer vitamindcouncil.org/about-v...

Supplementing with D3 if you don't tolerate the sun.

Food sources prevention.com/food/foods-h...

Recommended level, according to the Vit D Council with your unit of measurement is 40-60ng/ml

Which means I’m well under the normal range ? If I supplement it what’s the recommended dosage that I should take ?

Vit D Council page about dosing

vitamindcouncil.org/i-teste...

Scroll down to My level is between 10-20 ng/ml

Look at the table To achieve this level… Take this much supplement per day…

Check out what's needed to achieve 40ng/ml, 50ng/ml, 60ng/ml and supplement the amount recommended for the level you wish to achieve. It's going to be between 3200iu and 7000iu depending where you want to be. Personally I go for the top of the range and am now on a maintenance dose to keep it there. I test twice a year - November and March/April

There are important cofactors needed when taking D3

vitamindcouncil.org/about-v...

D3 aids absorption of calcium from food and K2-MK7 directs the calcium to bones and teeth where it is needed and away from arteries and soft tissues where it can be deposited and cause problems.

D3 and K2 are fat soluble so should be taken with the fattiest meal of the day, D3 four hours away from thyroid meds.

Magnesium helps D3 to work and comes in different forms, check to see which would suit you best and as it's calming it's best taken in the evening, four hours away from thyroid meds

Check out the other cofactors too.

Thank you so much for your reply, it’s so informative. Do I need to supplement for k2 and magnesium if the levels in my blood are within normal range ? Haven’t got it tested though. Just wondering.

K2 - You only need to take it if you take a D3 supplement. If you get your level up to the recommended level you'll need a maintenance dose of D3 to keep it there.

Magnesium - needed to help D3 to work and very often low in us Hypos anyway. I take Mag Citrate to help my obstinate bowels and I'd need it whether or not I was Hypo :D

OR.....

Rereading your reply I might have misunderstood. Do you mean testing K2 and magnesium to see if they are in the normal range?

I've never come across that question before and I don't know anything about testing K2. Here in the UK we can get a lot of tests done privately but I have not seen that one and I don't know if our GPs would do it anyway.

I see. So there’s no way to know the level of k2 in blood ? We just need to take it together with D3 right ? What’s the recommended dosage we need to take for k2 then ? And also magnesium ? Sorry for having so many questions.

There must be a blood test for Vit K because it's to do with coagulation and I know that in some circumstances Vit K injections are given in hospital because insufficient Vit K can lead to excessive bleeding - I don't know the ins and outs so can't explain any further. But I don't know of any tests that the public can get done themselves to test their level. There may be, I just don't know about them. However, there is K1 (this aids blood clotting) and K2 which has two forms - MK4 and MK7.

K2-MK7 is needed when taking D3 to direct the extra uptake of calcium from food that D3 is responsible for, the K2 sends it to the right place (bones and teeth). Information in the link to the Vit D Council I gave.

K2-MK7 supplements usually comes in dose of 90-100mcg and that is enough for a D3 dose of up to 10,000iu.

If you are on blood thinners (eg Warfarin) caution should be taken when considering supplementing with K2.

Magnesium you just take what the serving suggestion is on your pack. I take magnesium citrate powder and the serving of magnesium is 350mg. Most supplements are around 350-450mg.
