Hypo or normal?

Hi, had blood results today and was told i was borderline and no action required. TSH 6.3 T4 14.4 just wondered if everyone thinks this is normal. Was diagnosed Graves in 2006, given RAI in 2009. Results have fluctuated ever since in annual blood tests.

Do you have the reference ranges? They vary quite a bit for FT4 in particular.

I'd say, "of course you are now hypothyroid and should receive thyroid hormones".

Ask your surgery, your doctor, if you received the results printed out, look on that piece of paper.

If you know for certain which lab did the tests, you might be able to look up that lab and see the reference range on-line.

Hello Lou,

Welcome to our forum and sorry to hear that you don't feel well.

A TSH of 6.3 appears high, T4 is difficult to tell without ranges but I would guess you need thyroid hormone replacement.

Also it is possible to have Hashimotos with Graves Disease meaning the remaining thyroid hormone levels will fluctuate as the gland is attacked by thyroid antibodies.

In this scenario thyroid hormone will eventually decrease and need replacing .... although replacing it now would suppress further attacks and make life a lot more comfortable.

Ask your GP (or whoever supplied the test results) to advise of the ranges (numbers in brackets) as these vary according to area and labs.

Thanks radd and thanks for the welcome,

I will research hashimotos as just learning a bit more about hypo after being hyper previously.

Lou,

I suggest Hashimotos in response your advising of fluctuating blood test results. As TSH varies anyway Hashimotos would need confirmation by elevated either TPOAb or TGAb but the treatment remains the same what ever ..... Levothyroxine.

Hashimotos
