Going gluten free is quite often suggested when anti-bodies are raised. It can help. Going gluten free can help many inflammatory conditions too as gluten can inflame the gut wall. Our gut health can reflect so much of our health - so it is important to be watchful. If you do not have symptoms - then your gut could be fine.

Read as much as you can - Izabella Wentz is a Pharmacist who has Hashimotos. She has a website and in depth articles. There is a book and you can sign up for her Newsletter. So read and learn as much as possible and decide what is right for you :-)

Before you go gluten free, do a blood test to exclude celiac disease. Gastroenterologists advise this.

You really need to know if you have another serious auto immune disease (about one in 20 of Hashi's sufferers do) for yourself and for your near blood relatives who should be tested if you are positive.

If you go gluten free without a celiac test, and find you are much better, you will not want to go back on gluten later for ages to do the celiac test.

I speak from experience.

Thank you so much for your reply hun, I should have my tpo results back by Thursday so going to wait till I speak to my doctor as I'm not seeing endocrinologist till April, do you know if my gp can treat hashimotos x

Yes, hypothyroidism is normally treated by gps unless there are complications. Are you looking at anti oxidants, and have you got enough vit d?

Okies hun, what anti oxidants and vitamins do you recommend I should be using, had a rubbish night last night with the swallowing just wondering what else I can do to reduce this inflammation, hope you're well today x

Unless you know your vit D levels are already optimal (or your calcium levels are out of range) you are pretty safe to supplement D in a British winter - try 2,000iu daily. Vit D is necessary to make glutathione, a major anti oxidant. Keep your C levels up and take plenty of natural oxidant containing foods like cloves and blueberries. It makes sense that if you have an inflammatory condition there will be a lot of demands on the "cleaning teams" in the body.

But if you can't sleep because you can't swallow that's quite serious, isn't it - is your GP aware how bad things have got? Think you need another appointment.

Thank you hun, I've spoken to my gp twice about it and nothing has been done he's gave me an appointment for Friday but just to discuss test results as he said he can't give me anything for inflammation, it needs to be my endocrinologist apparently spoke to his secretary yesterday and she told me he would ring this morning but hasn't,I don't have an appointment with him till April, don't know where to go from here,I've had numerous tests ( scan, biopsy and blood's since November) and nothing else has been done treatment wise, I'm solely tempted to opt for another hospital bit this is going to take time x

OK, what is your TSH again? Can you go to the surgery and get a copy of your results and post them here with ranges, then you might be better armed to discuss them with the GP.

When you see him emphasise that you are finding it hard to sleep because of the difficulty swallowing, and ask him what you should do if you begin to choke, and at what point, if the throat begins to close, you should go straight to A&E. That might wake him up a bit.

Meanwhile write a letter to the endo spelling out that you are now having difficulty swallowing. Ask if, given that you will not meet till April, he is able to give any instructions for treatment to the GP in the meantime. Ask what increase in symptoms would be needed for you to go straight to A&E.

That might wake him up too.

Hi there hope your good today,I had real problem swallowing last night went to walk in and doc was like what do you want me to do go away and see your gp,so today I went to gp he's puzzled by the fact I can eat and drink without problems, though not swallow saliva, though he has given me something to stop production of the saliva to see if it helps, but he also said ive gone from hypothyroid to hyperthyroid x

Ok, sounds like he's trying.
