weight loss with hypothyroid

Does anyone have any tips on how to raise your metabolism. I have low temperature normally around 35.5 and resting pulse of around 50. Am 59 and would like to lose a stone. Been trying low carb for several weeks but cannot even lose a pound. Feel that my metabolism is at a standstill. I am hypo but on reduced levo as T4 was 27 and advised overmedicated.

Hi Tessica,

You could try to eat 5/6 smaller meals every day. This can kickstart your metabolism into action. I think it is all to do with thinking.

If we think by only eating twice a day or by cutting out this and that, we are being very good. That is our brain talking.

In fact, our body goes into starvation mode and conserves our fat deposits in case of a famine.

I honestly think it is a matter of retraining our thinking on the whole food issue.

I love food. Reading about it, buying it, cooking it, and eating it. As we get older we can't eat as much and we used to, or want to, which is a pity.

Maybe try it for a week initially and only weigh yourself at the start and at the end of that week. On the same day and at the same time.

Good luck my dear👍

The only way of raising your metabolism is to raise your T3. Has it ever been tested? If not, it might be a good investment to have a private test - FT4 and FT3 together to see if you're converting OK.

If the FT4 was that high, and you're still not losing weight, the odds are that you aren't converting that T4 to T3 - the active hormone. And, by the way, you're only over-medicated if your FT3 is over-range, but doctors are too uneducated to know that.

In fact, doctors are so ignorant about thyroid that a lot of us end up medicating ourselfves. If you can't convert T4 to T3, the only thing you can do is buy your own T3 and take that.

You cannot kick-start your metabolism by eating smaller portions more often if your T3 is too low. It just doesn't work that way. The odds are that your extra weight isn't even fat, so dieting won't have any effect on it. However, it could make things worse...
