Benjamin, TSH is suppressed, but FT4 and FT3 are within range, so I don't see why your endo is concerned. FT4 is top of range and FT3 almost in the top third of range.
If your endo is blethering on about atrial fibrillation or osteoporosis the Rotterdam Study has found no association between TSH levels and AF, and a recent meta-analysis of patients with TSH <0.1 found one excess hip fracture every 1,000 patient-years.
Thank you Clutter for your reply. Im not concerned about my Tsh now, im not going to take no notice of what the endo says. Ive been reading about vit A deficiency and think i may be lacking this, as my eyes have been so sore & red for some time now & other similar symptoms. Can you recomend a suppliment to take that covers all thats required vit a, b1, b2, b3, b6 & zinc ? I asked for my vit & minerals to be tested but ive been refused ! So frustrating
Benjamin, A multi-vit won't have enough of anything to address deficiency. If you suspect you have vit A or B12 deficiency it would be better to get a baseline blood level before supplementing to guide dosing. You can order private vitamin and mineral tests via thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...
B Complex should have the RDA of all the B vitamins. If you supplement 15mg zinc it would be a good idea to also supplement 325-375mg magnesium as they're synergistic.
Hello Benjamin,
I hope you are feeling better now.
Your results are good. A suppressed TSH is fine if T3 & T4 are in upper quadrant of range.
As you have suffered hypothyroidism for some years it is wise to have a vits and nutrients tests for Vit D, folate and ferritin. Post results complete with ranges for members to comment.
Below is a link explaining the importance of supplementing in hypothyroidism.
Thank you Flower007, im still suffering with other symptoms of sore red eyes & fatigue but im convinced i am deficient in either a vit or mineral as i have sore lips on the inside too. My ferritin was very low at 7 but since ive been taking the ferrous fumerate its increased to 31. I know ive still got a way to go to get my ferritin in the higher range but thanks to everyone who has advised me im getting there. Ive noticed such a difference in my nails whilst taking ferrous fumerate, my nails are growing normal instead of all bumpy. I just hope i can get to the bottom of my eye scenario & the tiredness, i am going to go and buy some suppliments tmw mainly vit a & zinc and see if that helps. Can you recommend any ?
No1 has ever checked my thyroid antibodies. I have red sore eyes every morning when i wake up, ive been told i have dry eyes but ive never suffered with this before. I have sore skin inside my mouth, tiredness & a high temperature. Im going to look up the symptoms of hashimotos, i keep telling the endo i dont feel well but they dont take no notice !
I complained about gritty eyes several years ago and would slip in a mention of Sjogren's whenever there was trainee GP sitting in on the consultation. When the tissues around my eyes were sore, plus burning soles to the feet and pins and needles, I again mentioned Sjogren's and had a whole load of antibody tests (vasculitis, lupus, hepatitis etc.). The thyroid peroxidase antibodies were the only ones noted, and they'd dropped by 50%, so I don't think there's much of a relationship between their number and how I feel. I've never been prescribed anything for symptomatic relief.
Here's some information about how thyroid disease can affect the eyes:
I take a multi-vitamin and mineral from a Bedford firm's eBay store. They regularly drop prices by 10% and offer a quantity discount. Doubling my vitamin D3 supplementation had, I think, solved the burning soles nerve problems -- my slightly below-range serum calcium is being monitored but not otherwise helped, and so I increased the D3 (and sunshine exposure) for this.
According to my interpretation of the Rotterdam Study, you may have a risk of about 10% of atrial fibrillation over 10 years with FT4 at the upper end of the range.
