Does Hypo cause irregular periods?

Hi there

I have gone from a regular cycle of 28 days prior to starting T3 last November to having a cycle of 23 days and 33 days. I am on 45 mcg and I don't think I'm optimal yet. I had a blood test for sex hormones last week and see my GP tomorrow for the results.

I am wondering why I am having shorter periods one month and longer the next and then shorter again. It's like clockwork. What hormone imbalance would cause that?

Also, I have developed lots of spots :( lots of tiny pimples all over my chest and neck and bigger ones develop on my face in the week leading up to my period. I have never had spots like this not even at puberty. I was always very lucky to get just one now and again. I am 46.

Any ideas? Thanks so much

The hormone imbalance is thyroid hormones as they control the whole of our metabolism from head to toe. When you are on an optimum dose everything should be rectified.

I hope you feel better soon. Some people do complain about skin problems initially and that should settle too.

Hello CarolineAnne,

There is a strong link between a woman's cycle and unbalanced thyroid hormones. The link below although primarily is aimed at Hashi sufferers, it still manages to explain the connection really well.

Thank you both for replying. Thanks also for the link Flower007. I am Hashis so I'm just going to have a read now. :)

Yes, low thyroid can mess up periods so much. I opted for a hysterectomy at 39 because i was in such a mess... It was years later i found out that maybe this could have been avoided if my thyroid hormones had been increased......

Get your thyroud test results and check them over.. Make sure your free t3 and free t4 are towards the top end of the ranges. If they aren't, adjust your meds till they are. Ignore the tsh.
