Just curious if its still possible to be hypothyroid etc even though your Thyroid peroxidase antibody and Thyroglobulin antibody are negative? as most of all thyroid problems are autoimmune?

Leahcim, 90% of hypothyroidism is thought to be due to autoimmune disease. The other 10% is due to congenital hypothyroidism, thyroidectomy, radioactive iodine ablatement and idiopathic causes ie don't know why.

oooooooo, bet that 10 % rarely get diagnosed then :(

Leahcim, those without a thyroid have no problem getting a diagnosis, no thyroid = hypothyroid.

Yes you can. There are several other things that can stop your thyroid working such as:

lack of iodine, thyroid cancer, pituary problems.

Yes. I've had my antibodies tested twice but they weren't raised.

That said, I do have other autoimmune issues (alopecia areata, wheat sensitivity) so I was surprised they weren't raised. But apparently, that doesn't mean that my hypothyroidism isn't autoimmune - it may just mean that there weren't any antibodies at the time I was tested - in other words, I was having a "good spell" at that time, so they didn't show up...

leahcim,

I understand what you meant but laughed at when you said it sucked that Jazzw had such low antibodies, they didn't show up in a test.

Well seeing as how most doctors suck and they need very specific results to diagnois you. She needed them to show up to get help but she felt ok at the time you know :(

You can be hypothyroid and have normal labs, but symptoms, because the thyroid receptors don't work correctly from inflammation and other issues.

I've never had antibodies and my results never indicated secondary hypothyroidism. I've no idea what us going on with me, but two grains of Thyroid S fixed it.

Yep. My antibody tests have always been normal. But other bloods are off and I have the DI02 mutation. X

Yes I have been diagnosed hypothyroid but antibodies were in normal range. GPs appear puzzled by this.

I do however have raised anti nuclear antibodies but have no idea if this has a bearing on my thyroid.

Both my mother and daughter have thyroid problems.

No antibodies here, tested negative twice. No idea what caused my hypo but I was diagnosed over 40 years ago. My symptoms started at some stage after my second child was born and crept up on me until I was diagnosed when he was about two years old.

hello SeasideSusie, I had the same - 38 years ago. my hypofyse is involved and it made my thyroid go down to zero. doctors said this can manifest after a shock and/or giving birth when the hypofyse has to manage a lot of extra hormones . earlier this was known as 'Sheehan syndrome', but nowadays women get controlled on their thyroid levels after birth (in the Netherlands). 5 month after my second child was born the hospital called me to come immediately because the lab results said I had to be dead already . Now I take 150mg Thyrax, but during around 35 years I took 300mg. No problems.

you can have Hashimotos and have normal antibodies tests. The definitive tests are a thyroid ultra sound and biopsy of the thyroid.
