Runny waxy ears

Hi, this may be a rather silly question but has anyone has issued with runny ears since taking levo? I've noticed since taking the mess my ears are really waxy but soft rather than hard (sorry I know it's disgusting)! Thanks Sarah

I have a theory which has no studies to back it that the reason why hardened earwax is a problem anecdotally in Hashis might be because of the low body heat - that ears maybe warm and empty a bit at night in us when we are normal humans - so possibly Levo, raising the body temperature gradually as thyroid function is restored, might cause the ears to begin to drain naturally again at night.

Your comment is not at all disgusting but very interesting.

Either I am totally bonkers or you heard it here first.

Thanks for the reply, I'm hoping that is resolves once my levels are ok. Don't remember them being like this before I had hypo - but then I think I've been hypo long before diagnosed so can't remember that far back!!

I had this when my medication levels were too low so thought it was a hypo symptom. I also had very itchy ears

Thank you - I've only been on meds for 3 weeks now so guessing my levels aren't correct yet so could be the case - although it's only started since taking Levo.

Yes I have this problem too, also very itchy intermittently.

Cotton buds are your friend!! X

I have this "treacle" problem and I work in Ent so can get them suctioned. As a preventative try and use a good wax softener product daily and it should dribble out on its own.

Then keep it up weekly.

However, don't be tempted to use cotton buds as it is so soft it just pushes it further down onto the eardrum and is harder to remove and can cause some temporary hearing loss.

Suctioning is available in Ent departments but GPs have the water syringe mostly.

There are some excellent creams for itchy ears available from GP or ask the chemist.

My wax problem does not seem to be resolving despite normal levels (whatever they are!).
