I'd like to hear from anyone having tried Thyrogold with success...or not. Or any other OTC thyroid product, for that matter...if you do well on it, how much do you need to take?
Thyrogold?: I'd like to hear from anyone having... - Thyroid UK
Thyrogold?
Hi I am about to start Thyro Gold am just waiting to find out dose I should take as am on levo..so I too will be interested...Thyro Gold website has lots of positive testimonials.
I'd be very interested in finding out too...!
Sesbo and thecat, A member advised that 1 x 300mg is roughly equivalent to 200mcg Levothyroxine. It would be better to email Tammy Lowe and verify for yourselves.
Thanks Clutter..yes I emailed Tammy earlier for advice..thanks very much
Hello Sesbo,
Can you please advise the web address for the Thyro Gold website?
Thank you.

I've just started taking it - nothing to report yet. I also just started taking SAMe - and definitely having great results from that. Cellular hypothyroidism can be tied to low serotonin levels; SAMe increases serotonin levels, as well as dopamine (the "rewards center").

I have tried it, can't say it made any difference. The drawback I experienced was I lost weight. I know this might be a positive for some but in spite of being hypo T I'm on the skinny side and do NOT want to get any thinner!!!
Think I fell for the "Sales Hype" on the Web Site (old enough to know better, but we all want an answer) Advise being careful
I have been using it since the first week of January. I started with the 150 mg and, increasing slowly as recommended, by June I was up to 900 mg (3 of the 300 mg). I hadn't noticed any change on that dose either, so I've recently backed down to 300 mg. Still no change. My bloodwork didn't show any change except that my TSH, FT3 and FT4 had all gone down a bit. I'm also on Armour at 1 grain. My doctor won't raise my dose of Armour because my TSH is so low (.01 at the last test), even though she acknowledges that low TSH is to be expected on Armour and also knows that starting Armour did help some of my symptoms. However, I still don't sleep well, feel like a slug most days and cannot lose weight, no matter what I do. I have been trying for more than five years now to lose weight that I gained suddenly after I turned 40 and NOTHING works for me. I just believe I am still undermedicated. So that's why I tried the Thyrogold, with very high hopes. Having given it seven months, I will finish off my current bottle but I don't plan to buy any more. I have been wondering if maybe the bovine NDT doesn't work for me for some reason. I confess I have no idea whatsoever why that might be the case and could have nothing to do with it, but I'm going to give Thiroyd a try since it's also porcine. Here's hoping! I am trying really hard to stay positive, but having tried so many things over the years, having been to SEVEN different doctors looking for help and having nothing work so far is very discouraging. Having said all that, I believe Thyrogold does work for other people so it's definitely worth trying. I hope you are one of those lucky ones!
I tried Thiroyd a couple of years ago and it was great!!! My levels were perfect, and I lost weight for the first time in years! Then, I was able to get Erfa where I live, and decided to give it a try...but I have to say that Thiroyd was better for me. I have been considering going back on it, or giving Armour a try...
I have been wondering why Dr. Lowe chose bovine thyroid instead of porcine? There must be a reason for it (availability? or something else?), but I believe porcine thyroid is closer to human...so you could have a point there.
Good luck with Thiroyd if you decide to go down that road!
I am desperate for the Thiroyd to arrive! Despite a 6,000 calorie deficit this week I have gained yet ANOTHER pound. It really encourages me to know that it worked so well for you. I find myself questioning my own conclusions a lot, that maybe it's NOT my thyroid, but then I look at my numerous spreadsheets and I can see absolutely NO correlation between my weight changes, calorie deficits or number of carbs over time. Since taking Armour, some of my other symptoms have improved but the weight just will not move. My FT3 and FT4 are always in the low range of "normal" but they have gone down recently and I have a really hard time getting up to do the things I need to do. The weight and the lack of energy are the most major symptoms I have that haven't shown any improvement at all. I've been stuck on one grain of Armour for over a year now. I really do hope this will help me. Reading some of the symptoms others are suffering, I feel bad for worrying so much about my weight. However, I am extremely unhappy and uncomfortable and I really don't want to go anywhere like this. Thanks so much for sharing your success with me!
Have you checked your insulin and blood sugar levels? I had to correct those before I could lose weight...I opted for OTC products (Hyponidd and Diabecon) instead of prescription drug Metformin, and I started to lose weight effortlessly for the first time in fifteen years (I was diagnosed with Hashimotos in 2000).
Both my blood sugar and insulin levels were just below the upper normal range in the morning, , after 8 hours of fasting, indicative of insulin resistance. Insulin is a fat-storing hormone.
As far as I know, insulin resistance means that your body produces enough insulin, but that it cannot use it effectively to lower blood sugar levels, which is why both levels rise. You don't yet have diabetes 2, although I guess it could develop into it.
I lost 18 kilograms after going on Hyponidd and Diabecon but, then again, I had been diagnosed with insulin resistance.
Taking those supplements also diminished my appetite and reduced my cravings for sweets.
Then again, you could very well be under-medicated, as 1 grain of Armour is a starting dose rather than a maintenance dose...
I was on a doctor-supervised diet for 10 weeks (in fact, it was the only consistent weight loss I have had but it was expensive and even they couldn't believe how little weight I was losing on the diet). During that time, they tested my fasting blood sugar every two weeks, and it was always somewhere between 63 and 84. My doctor didn't think that insulin resistance was my problem but she was willing to prescribe Metformin on a trial basis. I don't like drugs though so I never really took it. Because of my lifestyle - eat mostly non-processed food and work out 5 days a week - and because my FBG has only once been over 100 (and that was years ago before I started getting serious with changing my eating) I don't think insulin resistance is what's going on. However, I do have a family history of diabetes, so it's possible that my genes are just working against me.
I use a BodyMedia every day to monitor my activity levels. I believe that my metabolism must be really slow, so I decreased my height in the settings from my actual 5'9" to 4'6" to get the algorithm they use to start off with a lower calorie burn estimate. I still show burning 2500 calories a day! I then take 90% of that number (tests show that it's 90% accurate, for normal people anyway!) and have an big enough deficit every week that I should be losing at least 1.5 pounds a week. It's madness! That's why I think it just has to be my metabolism and I don't know where else to turn except the thyroid. I am already supplementing all the things I've read can affect thyroid and weight loss. I just really am at a loss at this point. No doctor seems to have a clue or seems really interested in working to figure out what could be wrong, and Armour did start helping me in the beginning. I just keep plugging along looking for something that will actually help me.
Sorry, didn't meant to rant and carry on or take over the post!
No, don't worry about it, I think it's good that you have tested your fasting blood glucose level, and ruled out insulin resistance! You should not take anything to lower your blood glucose or insulin levels (even OTC products) if you don't know for sure weight gain or problems losing weight could be related to them.
Good luck!
Anna
I just went back and reread what I wrote above. I wonder if my backing off from the 900 mg is what has caused me to start gaining weight again. Duh. If that is the case, then it would seem to me that the Thyrogold was probably helping but that, as I suspect, I was not getting enough to erase all my symptoms and allow me to lose. If that is the case, I would say the TG helped but I will need to find something that works BETTER for me so I don't have to use quite so much of it. Is my logic crazy? I spend a lot of time thinking about this subject so I never know if I'm overthinking or oversimplifying. Or if I'm just plain wrong. There HAS to be some reason I can't lose weight with all the things I'm doing to be healthy.
Heather, perhaps you should have TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested to check levels. If 300mg TG is equivalent to 200mcg T4 you were taking a lot of hormone and overmedication can cause weight gain.
thyroid.about.com/od/thyroi...
I have just had a test this month. My TSH was .01, but FT4 was 1.05 (range .93-1.70) down from 1.14 at previous test. My FT3 was 336 (range 200-440), down from 322 at previous test. I just don't have the energy I should have, don't sleep well, have daily edema, breathlessness, sluggishness... It's very frustrating. I have been a regular exerciser since the age of 13 when I started running with my parents (I'm now 45) and never had problems losing weight with diet and exercise in the past. I have been supplementing vitamins and minerals designed to help with thyroid, weight, and hormone imbalance for quite some time now. I have also had tests that show my supplementing has definitely been improving things as I'm now "within range" on those. I just don't know what else to think. I think TG just didn't work well for me, not that it didn't work at all. Thanks for listening!
Heather, were those results on 1 x 300mg or 3 x 300mg?
Perhaps one of the branded NDTs would suit better?
I am currently on 1 grain of Armour. I was trying TG because I wasn't continuing to improve on just that one grain of Armour. Those results were after I had been taking 900 mg TG since mid-April BUT had backed off for about a week or so to 300 mg TG before the blood test. It was getting expensive and I wasn't feeling better on 900 mg either so it seemed wasteful.
Heather, it's hard to tell what 300-900mg was doing as you cut dose. Can't you increase Armour?
If I do, I'll be doing it on my own as my doctor is too afraid to do it. Despite the fact that my FT3 isn't on the high end, my TSH is suppressed. I don't want to run out of my Armour before I can refill my prescription. That's why I want to find something else to supplement my Armour because the Thyrogold is going to be too expensive if I have to keep taking 900 mg or more a day. It may have been keeping me steady but it didn't seem to be making me BETTER. I've been taking it since January, gradually increasing. I would love to increase my Armour, but the doctor won't do it.
