Question about blood test results, specifically antibodies tests...

Hi all,

I've had my antibodies tested for the first time and I'd heard antibodies should be a negative number but mine are 10.4 for Thyroglobulin Antibodies (range 0--115) and 5.0 for Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (range 0-34). Do you think this suggests I am indeed hypothyroid or is it possible to have a 'normal' thyroid with these readings?

My TSH reading was 1.81 (range 0.27-4.2) and FT4 was 14.5 (range 12.0-22.0). Also, T4 was 92 (range 59-154) and FT3 was 4.5 (range 3.1-6.8)

I've had hypothyroid symptoms for quite a while and have been feeling particularly ill recently with fatigue, muscle pain, mental fog, very dry hair etc. but I've been wondering if this is due to my thyroid or something else.

Thanks in advance for your help everyone!

Hi, Thyriid UK have symptom checker that you might find helpful to look at -if you go onto their main website.

You haven't included the reference ranges (numbers in brackets next to results) . These vary from lab to lab so it's important to post them with your results.

We are not medical people so we can't make diagnosi but can comment from our own personal experience.

In your shoes I'd repost results with reference ranges plus your symptoms and ask your GP if he will run the following blood tests : b12, iron, vit d and folate. Low levels of these can make you feel tired and are also frequently evident in an underactive thyroid -ensuring theses are optimsed will also help your thyroid to work at its best.

Hope this helps

Thank you both for your replies, I've edited my original post with lab ranges.

I understand the posters here are not medical experts but unfortunately most here seem to have a better understanding of thyroid disease than most GPs I've seen! I will make an appointment with my GP but as you say, it's helpful to hear people's experiences and if you can still be in-range for certain blood tests but still have symptoms.

I've been reading other threads on this forum with people saying their antibodies are in the high hundreds, I just feel pretty crap at the moment and mine are in the low tens. Should I feel this sick with low antibody levels?

London_Lady, your low antibodies mean you don't have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's). One can become hypothyroid without having elevated antibodies.

Your thyroid levels don't currently indicate you are hypothyroid but symptoms can precede abnormal bloods by years.

Have the mineral and vitamin tests suggested above and post the results with ranges in a new question for comment and advice. Low/deficient ferritin, vitD, B12 and folate can cause musculoskeletal pain, fatigue and low mood similar to hypothyroid symptoms.
