Thyroxine and statins

PreciousLittlePeople profile image

Should you take statins if your on thyroxine? That's another thing my Dr wants me to go on.

I've heard different things. I really thought being optimally medicated would bring my cholesterol down, but its 7.5.

And advice gratefully received.

People on thyroid medication should not take statins.

nhs.uk/Conditions/Cholester...

Read the bits relevant to thyroid ^^ on that page.

The fact that you still have a cholesterol level of 7.5 suggests that your dose of levothyroxine might not be optimal for you. Do you have any results from thyroid function tests you can share?

Having said all that, do you realise that statins do not help women live longer at all? Read this page from Dr Kendrick's blog, paying particular attention to the graphs :

Once you've read that, read some more of his blog.

Then have a look at this site for more information on statins :

Great response from humanbean. When Dr Kendrick first qualified Cholesterol at 7.5 was considered quite acceptable. ( I refuse to use the dreaded normal word !! ) They keep lowering it so they can get more people onto statins and make more money. It is the biggest money spinner in the history of medicine. They are talking of a reduction to 4.5 when everyman and his dog will need statins....

Please do your research - there is lots of information.....

Agree with humanbean and Marz. I was given statins, tried them for possibly a week by which time I could barely walk and felt mega depressed so I stopped and told the locus I saw that I had stopped so that they didn't keep giving me more.

I found that when my Graves was at its worst my cholesterol was the lowest it has ever been and now that I am back to 'normal' my cholesterol is high again, although saying that I have been making oat bran muffins and it had come down very slightly.

I wouldn't want to take statins again, they made me feel SO ill.

Not what you're looking for?
