Well I have flaxseed both ground and whole and have had Hashimotos Thyroiditus for 4 years but I must admit I don't know if there are any contraindications or not!

OK, so there they are talking about goitrogens - flaxseed has goitrogenic properties - but the problem is, nobody really understands goitrogens!

As I see it, from my own experience and from talking to lots of people on the subject, a goitrogen is only a problem if it affects you. (And forget the bit about cooking it! If it affects you it'll affect you whatever you do to it!) If it affects you, you will know about it. Within a few hours you will feel like you're coming down with flu, you'll feel very cold, shivery, miserable, perhaps stomach ache, and very, very tired. If this doesn't happen, carry on eating it!

Goitrogens are not silent killers that sneakily attack your thyroid - or the hormone you're taking - without you knowing about it. Nor do they have a permenant affect. The symptoms die off in about 24 hours. So just ignore it all unless you find they make you ill. Simple.

However, none of this applies if you Don't have a working gland. Goitrogens only affect you if you still really on your gland for some of your hormone. :)

I'm no expert but I used to have them every day in a smoothie but was advised they weren't the best thing if thyroid, I switched to sunflower seeds and sometimes chia when I'm feeling flush, lol. I'm just crossing pinkies they are ok.

Northie, read my reply to mandy, above. People talk a load of rubbish about goitrogens. :)

Flaxseed = PUFA = thyroid suppressive. Look up Ray Peat, he has some good articles on this.

Your best bet is to try the recipes and monitor whether you get worse over 5 or 6 weeks. Generally, flaxseeds are good for health as they contain omega 3s and protective estrogens (that don't cause cancer) and are a good dose of fibre. They may be goitrogens, but so are a huge number of green vegetables, and strawberries. Some people are very sensitive to these things and others aren't
