Good morning Juan

I suspect you aren't yet on sufficient thyroid hormones but vitamins and minerals are necessary for us as well. It is best if you get your vitamins through food, for instance Vitamin A is in carrots and best if raw or steamed.

Thank you all , and I have just baught some coconut oil and some B12 vitamins hope that works ,

Your symtoms indicate your meds aren't sufficient. I would recommend investigating medication before adding further sups. There are other alteratives and excellent books that will give you choice, ie Stop The Thyroid Maddness.

Hi, I didnt loose the brain fog / confusion / lack of concentration until my t4 and t3 were in the top half of the chart. I have had to keep changing brands to achieve this.

Memory ..

I thought I would share the following info with you.

I suffer from SAD ( season effective disorder ) it also makes me crave carbohydrates ...... I know its caused by a lack of Seratonin but my light box isnt enough .. although I did improve somewhat with the light box after being diagnosed.

I read a very interesting artical about this a few days ago ( I even took the print out to the GP )

I was shocked at what this lack of an '' Amino Acid called '' Tryptophen '' can cause ..

Tryptophen is needed to make Seratonin in the brain and without enough of it , it causes s.a.d , cravings , MEMORY PROBLEMS , mood , pain , temperature control, sleep , endoctrin control , the list goes on ......... does this list sound familiar ?

Seratonin production also reduces naturally with age .. so if you have already been low it doesnt bare thinking about.

I have been complaining about my memory for 12 years and they just kept saying its stress.

Anyway I think its worth me trying it along with all the other vitamins and minerals I take.....

I found out its not with the vitimins and other amino acid at the health shops etc; cant get it anywhere .. you need a perscription for this amino acid so I am now waiting for the GP to come back to me with an answer from whoever it was she had to write to in London ..... and it will have to be on a private perscription .. I wasn't impressed ..

I said you can't give me a natural substance my body obviously needs but for 12 years the gp's in this practice have offered me Prozac and Amatryptaline which would cost more money.

One of the substances that tryptophan converts into is 5-HTP. 5-HTP is then converted into serotonin and that, in turn, is converted into melatonin.

5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) is available in the UK over the counter and online without a prescription. I buy it from Holland & Barrett. It isn't cheap. About £30 for 120 pills. But I only take one a day (50mg) so a bottle lasts me for 4 months. (Some people take much more but I can't tolerate a higher dose, it makes me jittery.)

Tryptophan can't be bought in the UK. But people can import it for their own use as far as I know (but I'm not making any promises!). It is available for sale from US websites (and probably lots of other countries too), and is easily found on US Amazon :

amazon.com/

And sites like iherb :

iherb.com/

Here is what happens to tryptophan in the body :

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trypt...

And links about 5-HTP and Tryptophan :

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5-Hyd...

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trypt...

Please be aware that 5-HTP can't be mixed with other anti-depressants.

I'm not actually convinced that 5-HTP will help your memory, but you might be lucky. I got an improvement in my mood within 24 hours or so of taking it. (I suffer from SAD too.) But sleeping improvements took several weeks.

The best thing for memory is getting thyroid meds optimal. But you could also think about these things :

1) Going on a gluten-free diet - it has to be 100% strict otherwise you might as well not bother. It isn't something you can cheat on. This has helped my brain function enormously.

2) I started taking methylated B vitamins. Previously I had only ever taken cheaper B vitamins. I'm currently taking Jarrow Methylcobalamin 5000mcg per day and Thorne Research Basic B Complex. According to blood tests my B12 and folate levels were very good, but I still felt I was suffering from symptoms like those of B12 deficiency. Switching to methylated B vitamins has helped me enormously.

3) If you have very low B12, then perhaps you have Pernicious Anaemia and need B12 injections. Can't help you with this one though...

Hi Humanbeing ...

I will read the info you attached thank you,

Apparently my B12 is ok although I had B12 injections every three months when I was in S Africa ? I did tell the GP when I went to register and my first consultation when I came here about the injections and I was told the NHS doesn't believe you need to take vitimins just eat a sensible diet ! But then they did reduce my Eltroxin from 150 to 100 without doing any tests at the same time.

According to my GP and the Endo all the tests ( spent most of the day in the '' day ward '' having them done ) ... they said they all came back normal .. just a small rise in inflamation. ?

I stopped eating gluten a long time ago .. the GP said she thought that's why my body was craving carbohydrates .. only carbohydrate in my house is sweet potatoes.

I tried to get Tryptophen in Holland and Barrett but the manager said they didnt sell it and she had never heard of it .. so I went online when I came home and it didnt come up on their website either.

I have just found out there is a pharmacy in town that sell Solgar vitimins but don't know if they are allowed to in UK but I am going to phone and ask.

GP asked me to give her two weeks to come back with an answer so if she says no then hopefully I will have enough info to get them myself elsewhere .. she also told me it would cost me £50 a month supply + the cost of the private perscription.

Thanks again :-)

Seriously, don't use a GP's prescription to buy tryptophan. You will pay through the nose for it. Buy it online if you don't want to try 5-HTP. I'd be very surprised if you found somewhere reputable that is selling tryptophan in the UK. It is banned here.

5-HTP is a fabulous anti-depressant that works well for lots of people - just look at the reviews on Amazon and iherb. I've been taking it for years.
