Desperate. Interpret my results as about to take Raw Thyroid.

Hi, I have posted before but am at the stage this morning I need to make a decision.

I had my latest child 3yrs ago and since then have been losing hair, flaky nails, a stone and a half in weight gain (stone in the last year) and am chilled to the bone. Finally decided to go to doctors who's thoughts were thyroid or low iron levels. Tests done were liver function, kidneys, thyroid, iron (lots).. anyway, all came back as normal. I have managed to get the results of thyroid with the range that the Dr looks at. TSH is 2.59. (0.4-4.0) and the T4 is 13.1 (9-25.0).

Because of these figures being within the range for normal, can someone explain if they are lowish and would taking the Raw Thyroid by Nature Sources help me.

Also, I should mention that I had been taking vita tablets and kelp so would this have given a wrong reading???

Please give some advice as I would really appreciate,,

How much thyroid hormone is present in Raw Thyroid? I'll be surprised if you can get a proper answer. And that is so much the problem. Is it zero? Or "a little bit"? Or variable?

It has been discussed before, for example:

Poor you. It's very hard being ill when you have a small child to look after as well. I thought us "thyroid people" were not supposed to have kelp as it may interfere with thyroid hormone output. In other words that could effect your test results.

Bigbum, it is so horrible when we are struggling and just don't understand what is happening & why. If you suspect that you may have a thyroid problem, the best thing you can do is to educate yourself about it. I always use "Yout Thyroid and How To Keep It Healthy" written by Dr Barry Durrant Peatman. It is available on Amazon secondhand so not expensive. There are lots of other books available and so much information on the net (this site included).

I wouldn't advise you to go buying thyroid supplements/medications without knowing what you are doing as our health is such a complex matter.

Knowledge is power and learning is a very positve step forward. Good luck on your journey. Gill

I wouldn't rush into taking something none of us appear to have any knowledge about. You are feeling bad and the GP says your results are 'normal' but your TSH is high if you have clinical symptoms and your T4 low. which together with symptoms and results points towards a thyroid gland problem.

There is one over-the-counter non-prescription product which may be helpful to you as it was developed and produced by a doctor who was an Adviser to Thyroiduk who died accidentally. He was so furious that so many people remained undiagnosed or unwell on levothyroxine and developed the following product. It is now run by his widow, Tammy. There have been positive posts about this product and you can read the testimonials. At least this product is genuine and is made from New Zealand Cows.

So Shaws, am I right in thinking that you see my results as not normal?? I have to add that in the 90's I became very unwell with ME to the point of being bedridden and needing disability aids but with the help of a specialist, I learnt to pace myself and listen to what my body was doing- I feel about 90% better except for the foggy brain and slurry when I'm tired.. The muscles don't ache like in ME and that complete tiredness isn't the same - so I know this is different, I have always been cold since having ME and my hubbie laughs about it when the heating is on full wack or I'm wandering the house with a blanket wrapped over me. I truly feel this isn't the return of ME as I know it hasn't gone away but it is a different feeling.

This is the interpretation of results. Your results might be normal for someone who doesn't have clinical symptoms but you do have. You also have ME which many believe is connected to a dysfunctional thyroid gland.

Nowadays doctors are told to diagnose/prescribe according only to the TSH and they also don't know/have no knowledge of clinical symptos

Ah yes,, I see what you saying. Symptoms point to it but my TSH is higher. What difference would taking kelp have made if any to the figures,, was it hiding the problem? (sorry for being a pain)

I don't know much about iodine. If you were taking levo it is not recommended to take iodine. The thyroid gland does need iodine but I believe we have to be careful not to take too much and levo does contain it.

Can you not buy Thyro Gold or something very similar in the UK?

None of the "glandular" supplements available in the UK claims in any way to have any thyroid hormone content. The vendors go out of their way to ensure they make no claims but lots of statements from which you could take inferences.

If you want to try NDT, buy a proper one abroad (eg Thyroid-S) cheaper than a supplement and more reliable. Or go for something like thyro-gold or Nutri-meds which does have hormone in it (but is way more expensive than NDT).

Thank you so much for your help. As you can tell I've had enough of being like this and unable to enjoy my little boy nor my teenage daughter , being unable to go out because of the hair loss and weight gain. My neighbour even asked if I was pregnant again!!

I went with the nutri med and saw they have a uk sister site for shipping and chose this mainly because I could get tablets and therefore cut them and start slowly. Quite expensive but will be worth it. Thank you all so much for your help and guidance, links and books to read. I will post when I have any news.

Thank you all, you may have just given my family back their wife and mummy.
