Vit D: Can anyone tell me if this is good, bad or... - Thyroid UK
Vit D
Well you will probably be told it is fine - but it ISN'T Divide the result by 2.5 and then go to the website below where there is a chart telling you how to dose according to your result of 10....
Seems you need at least 5000 IU's daily. Although on that very website they are talking about 7000IU's being a routine dose. Campaign in progress. Take time to look around the site - so much to learn !
Ooops - forgot to mention - you will need to take K2 with the D3 to ensure calcium goes to the correct
places....

Thank you.. My result just came in & my GP just finished for a holiday.. I was going to ask her if I could still begin NDT with this low result!!!
Should imagine it would be fine. How are your levels of Iron - Ferritin - Folate - B12 ? Are they low too ? You just need these levels to be good for good metabolism of everything to do with the thyroid....
Pretty much low, I've been taking a B12 spray under the tongue & a super strength multi vit from holand & Barrett for 2 weeks now & I actually feel a bit better doing this.. My stamina has lasted a bit longer than a few weeks ago..
It will take longer than a couple of weeks for your level of B12 to be good. How much are you taking ? Do you have your result ? Also for Iron and Ferritin and Folate ?
b12 has gone from 244 to 349 in one month.. Ferritin 65.. Folate 3.5.. I don't have iron, as far as I know it's within range.. But then I'm only just within on everything else!
Once you are supplementing B12 - the tests mean very little I'm afraid. The result is still LOW as only 20% of the result is available to go into the cells where it is needed. Still it's on the up ! The range STARTS at 500 in Japan As mentioned in the link below.
According to the reference range you've been given :
Less than 25 nmol/L is deficient.
25 - 50 nmol/L is insufficient.
More than 50 nmol/L is sufficient.
Your result is 26 nmol/L.
So you have just managed to creep out of the deficient range and into the insufficient range. I'm not going to second-guess what your GP might say. Most people feel best when their vitamin D is close to 100 nmol/L. Some people prefer it to be even higher.
If your GP is not interested in treating you, or only prescribes a very low dose supplement, then it is easy and quite cheap to treat yourself. Buy supplements that specifically mention they are vitamin D3 or Cholecalciferol supplements. Avoid vitamin D2 or Ergocalciferol supplements. If you find vitamin D supplements that don't say exactly what they are, don't buy them.

In your shoes I would supplement with about 5000 iU supplements per day, but that might be too low and slow to get your levels up. I hope someone with better info will reply.
Vitamin D is fat-soluble so take it with your fattiest meal of the day.
Edit : I see Marz agrees with 5000 iU per day, which is nice.
Had to stand on my head but......your D is very low - bottom end of the scale
Wow thanks for that.. Great to know we're all in the same boat.. Can I ask if u yourself use NDT & if so, was your D low when u began??.. IM getting frustrated because I want to begin, but I need to do this correctly!!
Thanks for all that.. It's very informative .. We all keep learning here everyday.. Much appreciated!
Rudeboy, just read through - there's no need to wait for vitD levels to improve, get stuck in on NDT whenever you like. I'd order in some 5,000iu vitD3 softgel caps and take a couple a day for 4 weeks then cut to 5,000iu daily for a month and alternate days after that. Non-clued up GPs will prescribe 800iu daily tablets which are sufficient for infants. A clued up GP will prescribe at least 40,000iu a week.
