I now have results TSH 5.9 and

T4 13.9, TPO 759, ferritin 22.

No treatment, gp suggests fine review in 1 year. I have poor appetite, very puffy legs, eye lids, tiredness, periods irregular, achy joints, hair loss and weight loss.

I am 42 year old female and convinced my thyroid function is contributing here???? Any advice please.

Change your doctor is my advice.

To leave you for another year before your next thyroid gland blood test!

That's the problem with the guidelines, they completely ignore the clinical symptoms and say we should not have thyroid hormones until we reach the magic number of 10.

You have clinical symptoms of hypo and the very least they can do when you have a TSH of 5.9 is prescribe levothyroxine. You also have antibodies which means you have an autoimmune condition called Hashimotos.

Email louise.warvill@thyroiduk.org and ask for a copy of the Pulse online article by Dr Toft who was President of the British Thyroid Association. One of the questions is re antibodies. Highlight this question and which tells him to 'nip things in the bud' with levothyroxine.

When you get blood tests, always get a print- out from now on, with the ranges. Ranges are important as labs differ throughout the country and it makes it easier to comment.

When you take levo, on the morning of the blood test you don't take levo until afterwards and have tests as early as possible.

Everything Shaws says plus your ferritin is far too low and until you get it raised to 70 plus, you will have difficulty dealing with Levothyroxine and converting it to the active hormone, T3. You definitely need help now and also should test Vit D, B12 and folate, which will no doubt be low in range and need to be high in range, (whatever your GP says).

My first thought, well the one that is printable, is to change your doctor but I realise that isn't always possible for various reasons. When you get the info from Louise then is there another GP at your surgery you could talk to who hopefully may be better informed and will at least give you a trial of thyroxine. Otherwise you could may be post to ask if any others on the forum have a helpful GP in the area X in the town of Y and start looking for a new GP if no one in your present practice is sympathetic as you do need treatment. Good luck

Sadly many Docs do not have a clue about Auto-immune conditions. When I was diagnosed here in Crete in 2005 - the TSH FT4 FT3 were all in range. However I was sent for an Ultrasound which revealed nodes and the HIGH Anti-bodies was the confirmation that I had Hashimotos. The GP said I needed T4 to support the Thyroid whilst under attack - have always found that an acceptable and soothing explanation.

Please do have all the other tests mentioned and start taking control of your own health by supplementing. It may help you to feel better. Also read as much as you can about Hashimotos. Type Hashimotos into the Search Box on the Green Bar at the Top of the page and all the posts will appear :-)

Keep posting and asking questions ...your GP is neglectful through lack of knowledge....before blood tests became the way doctors diagnosed and treated - they were trained to observe clinical signs. Sadly that is no longer the way things are done. As many people here say - they can SEE when someone is Hypo - so why can't the Docs ?
