Hi,I'm sure this question will have been asked a thousand times but I am after advice on how to take armour thyroid.I have had hypothyroidism now for around 13 years and have been on levothyroxine ever since(now on 150mgs)and the symptoms have not subsided in all that time.I am now willing to give Amour thyroid a go.I have no idea what dosage to take or where best to order from, also if anyone knows of a private gp that could help I would be grateful.Regards Dan

If you email louise.warvill@thyroiduk.org she has a list of sympathetic doctors/endos and she will send you one after the holidays.

If someone has information re your request for NDT or a private doctor, they will send you a private message as it is against the guidelines to furnish details on the forum for self-medicating or doctors names.

It's quite easy to switch over. For instance you are taking 150mcg of levo at present, so 1gr of NDT is equal to around 100 mcg levo and you would require 1.5 gr of NDT. Sometimes we have to trial a few NDTs before we find one which suits, but some are lucky and from the first changeover and do well.

Some people get a larger grain and split the dose as it may work cheaper than different size grains. Not sure about this and someone will confirm or otherwise.

Hope you find that changing thyroid hormones will make you feel so much better as I'm sure it will.

I just tapped - Taking Armour - into the Search Box on the Green Bar at the top of the page and all these posts appeared. Hopefully there is something there to help you.... :-)

Whatever you do DO NOT just substitute your levo dosage for Armour, start on a low dose and build up to the same amount as your normal dosage of levo. I'm sure that doctors tell you to directly swap do it deliberately so they can crow about NDT not working!!

Hi thank you very much for your reply, when I finally get hold of some armour thyroid(Im struggling at the minute to fine some online)what dosage should I start on and how long before I up the dosage to the same level as the levothyroxine.I have thought about taking armour thyroid for a few years now but my GP and endocrinologist have always advised me against it but after feeling terrible for over ten years now I hope it will make a difference.Once again thanks for your replies.

How much Levothyroxine do you take, Danny?

Hi clutter, I am on 150 mcg at the minute.

Danny, that is roughly equivalent to 2 grains of Armour. However, the T3 in Armour can take a little getting used to so you should start with one grain and increase by 1/2 grain every two weeks.

Danny, I forgot to mention that it's usual to split the dose into two and take 8/12 hours apart.

Thank you so much for your advice.I do have a bit of trepidation about self medicating but as I have been suffering for so long with no improvement I will definitely give it a go.Did armour thyroid make big difference to how you was feeling?

Start on 1/4 grain and increase when you feel ready, don't rush it.

Thanks for you advice. How do you suggest I take armour,do you suggest I stay on my current level of levothroxine and take a small doses of armour at the same time?I'm pretty confused now as there are many different ways that people take armour and I'm not sure what to do.

I suggest you stop the levo for 2 weeks before you start Armour, levo is T4 alone, the storage hormone and takes at least 2 weeks to get out of your system.
