can thyroid grow again after tt
Sue, my surgeon told me that the major healing takes place in the first couple of months post thyroidectomy but the complete healing takes place over 18 months.
Thyroid can regrow after RAI but I've not heard of it regrowing after thyroidectomy.
Sorry to disillusion you Clutter, but mine has re-grown again. About 7 years ago I had a scan and the Radiologist said that if he hadn't know that I had already had a sub-total thyroidectomy, he would never have known as it looked as though it was still there. My Endocrinologist at the time said that he would be surprised if it began to work again though. I am pretty sure that it hasn't, otherwise I would not have to take this rubbish Levo still!
j_bee, I'm not disillusioned, just not heard of it after total thyroidectomy, although it's not uncommon after RAI. Has yours grown back to full size? Shame it isn't working so you can stop Levothyroxine.
According to the Radiologist it had grown back to full size, but as you say shame it isn't working fully, as I wouldn't be having such trials with Levo! GP has got me back to seeing 'old' Endo, so hope he can help. I know he has treated someone on this forum with NDT and hope he will do the same for me. Scared though to try this as it still might not work. Would love Goldshield Eltroxin back.
thanks will tweak the meds and see
I had a partial thyroidectomy in July and occaisionally get the pressure feeling in my throat. I`m on no medication. Thinking of doing private blood test to see if I`m in range with my thyroid hormones.
Regeneration of thyroid tissue after total thyroidectomy is well-known and reported. For example, from 1951:
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...
If I have read that right, it was only observed in Graves patients in that paper.

I've had mine done twice. Full TT about 20 years ago and last year had nodules removed. I have graves. As previous comments have said it takes months to fully heal you may fund you are feeling the internal scarring, or it could be that your meds need adjusted. I can feel thickness to the back my throat now but when my meds need adjusted I gets slightly thicker.
I am conviced that sometimes the thyroid grows back but its rare. Maybe like the liver it can regenerate but not as often as people think!!
Oh, never say die Glynisrose .... As a retired psychotherapist (read 'crippled wounded healer') I can vouch for autosuggestion conquering autoimmunity in several of my old patients. Now it's my own turn, I am gradually learning how this DOES apply to myself!!! I am working on reassuring my defunct thyroid like Lazarus from the dead. I will post up any results.
