Hi what level do you learned people recommend for optimum vit d? Just got my latest results as I test every autumn. Its 59 which I know is adequate but my husbands was over 100. He's not got autoimmune issues of course. Ive not supplemented at all this year due to lots of sunshine but will do over winter.

Please note the table is ng/ml - yours is possibly nmol/L so you will need to convert by dividing your result by 2.5 - which makes your result very low indeed. Even though you have had good sunshine this summer you need to expose lots of body around midday to acquire good doses of D. As we age the process of metabolising D also slows :-)

Mauled, 75-200 is optimal. Suggest 5,000iu daily for 4/6 weeks to build up and then 5,000iu alternate days until April.

Hi It all depends on the calcium result, it must always be in range. D affects it so do not increase without a calcium result, if below range you need to take some for the d to work. Above range you cannot safely take any D.

Hi if your Husbands Vitamin D is 100 that's great. but if yours is low, take some Vitamin D3/ Not vit D2 as this is synthetic and no use at all for building your vit D up. You see nearly all Doctors say Ooooh don't take over the RDA of 600iu as this could be very dangerous. IT WILL START TO TAKE CALCUIM OUT OF YOUR BONES & PLACE IT INTO YOUR BLOODSTREAM /But what these so called Doctors DON'T tell you is that for every 10,000 iu of Vit D3 you take you should in fact take one Super K2/ WHICH WILL KEEP THE CALCIUM RIGHT WHERE IT SHOULD BE IN THE BONES/ BLOODY DOCTORS PHARMAS THEY WANT TO JUST KEEP YOU TAKING 100S OF CHEMICALS/ PILLS/ WITH SOME REALLY BAD SIDE EFFECTS/ TO KEEP YOU ILL/ YES BIG STATEMENT / FOR GOD SAKE PEOPLE WAKE UP ! ASK THE QUESTIONS TO YOUR DOCTORS/ THEY ARE BLINKERED BY WHAT THEY READ/ FROM WHO I HEAR YOU SAY/ FROM THE BLOODY PHARMASUTICAL COMPANYS /WHO ELSE / WHO MAKE BILIONS OUT OF US BEING ILL AND PUMPING US FULL OF CHEMICALS THAT WE DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT'S IN THEM/ BUT WE JUST SAY OH RIGHT DOCTOR I'LL JUST DO EXACTLY AS YOU SAY AND TAKE WHAT YOU GIVE ME/ I'M SURE THESE NEW PILLS WILL DO ME GOOD derrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr HOW STUPID IS THE PUBLIC/ YES YOU ! PLEASE DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH/ THERE IS ONE GUY WHO HAS BEEN EXPERIMENTING WITH VITAMIND D3 FOR OVER 20 YEARS, AND HAS CURED ALMOST EVERY AILMENT HE HAD, JEFF BOWLES ON THE MIRACLES OF VITAMIN D3. NO I HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE GUY AT ALL/ BUT I WISH THE PUBLIC WOULD WAKE UP TO THE FACT THAT WE / EVERYBODY IS BEING PUMPED FULL OF CRAP/ CHEMICALS IN NEARLY EVERYTHING WE CONSUME. TAKE CARE EVERYBODY BIG T STOCKPORT CHESHIRE.

I am not at all sure that it is reasonable to classify vitamin D2 as synthetic and D3 as not synthetic (when considering supplements). I think that Wiki is right on how they are made commercially:

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is produced industrially by exposing 7-dehydrocholesterol to UVB light, followed by purification.[162] The 7-dehydrocholesterol is a natural substance in fish organs, especially the liver,[163] or in wool grease (lanolin) from sheep. Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is produced in a similar way using ergosterol from yeast or mushrooms as a starting material.

Does that make one synthetic and the other not? Or are both semi-synthetic in that a "natural" product is processed in various ways, including a fundamental chemical change, and purified?

Thank you everyone for your helpful responses. In Feb 13 my vit D was only 11 so I supplemented with big doses and it came up in about 8 months to 60. I also had a dexa scan and all is well with my bones. I've got a liquid D3 from Now. It seems the most benign of vitamin D supplements and did its job last year so I'll go for it again.
