Trouble swallowing can also be due to iron deficiency. Clearing the throat can be from post-nasal drip.

Of course it can all also be from the thyroid problem as well. But both of the above issues can and do occur with hypothyroid.

Thank you for that yes the doctor did say it could be post nasal drip ( Yuck) but this feeling of a lump in my throat is horrid makes me want to clear my throat of the constriction I can feel , I will certainly be going back to the doctors to get my blood checked :)

Welcome to the forum Nick.

Ask your GP to palpate your throat and neck to check for swelling (goiter) which can make swallowing difficult. If you have a goiter you should have an ultrasound to check whether it is compressing your windpipe. Members have reported extra mucus develops when they are undermedicated. Post your recent thyroid results with the lab ref ranges (the figures in brackets after your results) in a new question and members will advise.

Ask your GP to check ferritin (stored iron), vitamin D, B12 and folate too as they're often low/deficient in hypothyroid patients and cause musculoskeletal pain, fatigue and low mood similar to hypothyroid symptoms.

I get this often, and have nodules (after I found out after insisting on a scan!) , and it's minor but annoying. Follow advice given above ;)

I feel I have to 'clear my throat' every morning - sometimes until well after I arrive at work. I sometimes find it difficult to swallow particularly laying down at night - I find it helps to put my chin down to swallow!

hi its been bothering me for 8 months im totally fed up with it im back at the doctors next week its quite worrying , I also have the lying down problem it sometimes makes me feel im going to suffocate

Hi I have just been to my GP again with my throat problem Ive had since starting Methotrexate 3 months ago. It feels like I have a golf ball stuck in my throat all the time its, hard to swallow and when I lay down my throat feels like it is closing up. I have been to my GP on 4 occassions about this and have had penecillin and now for second time referred to ENT (I was told by hospital that there were no appointments available last time after waiting 3 weeks). I am sure it is my thyroid though Ive never been diagnosed with hypothyroid my last bloods showed TSH 5.37 which is raised. Just have to wait for further bloods and ENT appointment. Hope to get sorted soon its driving me mad. hugs Joolz.x

I have this and it is definitely when I am undermedicated. It is as though all the muscles are constricted with a circle of 'golf ball' in the middle. It has definitely improved with increased dose.

I have this especially since my T3 has been reduced from 70mcg to 60mcg. Hard to for me to decide if lower dose causing as I may have multiple sclerosis (under investigation, having tests). Good luck to everyone sorting this annoying throat problem!

Maybe its undermedication. I do remember I often choked on my food before I was diagnosed with hypo., Of course I did,nt know the reason then, but my throat must have been narrowing with the condition of the gland.
