Not enough oxygen in the blood? Chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD).

Have a look here:

nhs.uk/conditions/cyanosis/...

I suggest that it could be thyroid-related but there is absolutely no certainty (either way) without proper assessment and doctors are likely the best for doing this. They might not see a thyroid connection but they are probably much better placed to see other causes.

Have you had your B12 checked? I had this before diagnosis and I also have pernicious anaemia. I don't know if it is connected to thyroid it may be you aren't on enough meds.

Without trying to scare you I had bluish coloured lips when I had heart problems, becoming worse when I was on Beta Blockers.

Hi Silver Fairy and thank you all for your replies, I had a visit from a friend over the weekend I have not seen for a few years. I was quite shocked when I saw her, she has lost loads of hair and she now has more scalp showing than hair. Also her lips at times turned purple/bluish tinge. As I am underactive, I immediately thought maybe she could have thyroid problems, and wondered if bluish lips is a symptom, I know hair loss is. Obviously I didn't mention her hair, as I didn't want to upset her, but it is really terrible poor thing. I asked her is she has had her thyroid checked (as we were talking about mine) she said she hadn't and thought I was being daft to suggest she should. Quite worrying to think it could be heart/lung related, maybe I should ring her and suggest a GP visit. x

Yes. Definitely do that. With my mum blue lips were an indicator of heart problems.

I agree with Humphrey. She should see a GP. My blue lips were a result of severe bradycardia and arrhythmia. Luckily for me, both conditions have improved greatly on the correct thyroid medication. They were talking about a pacemaker but couldn't actually find anything physically wrong with my heart. It was just very slow and would forget to beat from time to time.

Blue lips often occur when very cold or when circulation is poor, such as when a person has a heart condition or respiratory issue. This is why it is important to get it checked out. It could be nothing to worry about or something that is easily treated, such as iron deficiency, but it is not worth the risk. I hope she listens to you and sees a doctor, just in case!
