what are most recent B12, folate and ferritin and iron results

What vitamin supplements are you taking

Pins & needles often low B12

Breathlessness can be low iron or ferritin

My B12 was out of range high, my ferritin was low but i have started taking iron. I now take Iron, Magnesium (not at Levo time), vit D3, Selenium, Guar Gum and eveninging primrose with star flower.

So are you taking a B12 supplement or daily vitamin B complex?

If not, high B12 can be misleading

Paradoxical B12 deficiency with hypothyroidism

What was last folate result?

If not taking a daily vitamin B complex yet, suggest you consider starting one

one with folate in (not folic acid)

This can help keep all B vitamins in balance and will help improve B12 levels too

Many Hashimoto’s patients have MTHFR gene variation and can have trouble processing folic acid.

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Igennus B complex popular option. Nice small tablets. Most people only find they need one per day. But a few people find it’s not high enough dose

Or

Thorne Basic B recommended vitamin B complex that contains folate, but they are large capsules. (You can tip powder out if can’t swallow capsule)

Thorne currently difficult to find at reasonable price, should be around £20-£25. iherb.com often have in stock. Or try ebay

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

In week before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg)

Used to get numb lips with onset of migraine. Forgot about that because it’s been a few years. I was undiagnosed at that time.

SlowDragon recently mentioned (I think) that 75 mcg was sometimes a problematic level of medication. I was interested in that, as I had problems at that level. I ‘acquired’ pulsatile tinnitus which I still have two years on. I did not question that comment for more detail at the time she mentioned it. I wish I had.

Yes I think that’s the dose that’s the most difficult to get use to/increase from

75mcg is high enough dose to significantly lower TSH so you start to rely more on the levothyroxine than your own dodgy thyroid output, it’s starting to increase metabolism, (hence need for higher vitamin levels) ….but in most people, (unless very petite) not high enough dose to offer enough replacement yet

Aah right. Glad you have replied and explained that. It makes sense. Another little anomaly in ‘care’ or lack of. All these tidbits that medics seem to have no knowledge or experience of - or they are just not interested. Thank you.

I think this reply was for SlowDragon . Just tagging her in case she misses it.

Suggest you try adding a daily vitamin B complex after breakfast

Perhaps initially just cut in half an Igennus B complex tablet. Increase to full tablet after a week if that’s ok

Big thanks for all your advice. I am supposed to be on 75 for 2 weeks then 100. Tempted to start 100 early - but i expect this is a naughty idea!!! Still inpatient for recovery. :)

Don’t rush, you can end up going backwards

Do i need this even though my B12 is fine (high)?

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply to JCMartin

If you read the link I gave you about Paradoxical B12 you can see that high B12 result can be misleading

We need all the B vitamins together

Hypothyroid patients often low in other B vitamins, especially Thiamine (B1)

If deficient in one, the others can’t be used. So B12 may appear high, but you’re not actually able to process it ….

So can have low B12 symptoms despite result looking high

I did have tinnitus which has stayed. I change from taking Tevo and broke a 50 accord in half. This helped. Trying to ignore the tinnitus but its hard. My internal tremors seem to have gone though.

Low calcium can also cause weird sensations around the mouth, hypoparathyroidism, where the parathyroid glands arent working properly can cause mouth tingling and numbness.

Internal tremors, very unsettling indeed. However the tinnitus possibly could be related - that vibration connection. Who knows? Recently I was using a certain salt which contained iodine and my hypo symptoms (internal tremors) feel more hyper than hypo. Stopped it when I realised it could be the culprit. Internal tremors much reduced - nearly gone. For Tinnitus I use a white noise machine, otherwise I would not get to sleep at all.
