Kelp: Hi any advice on taking Kelp I have been... - Thyroid UK
Kelp
Hi Ann
This is a question which has come up quite a few times and this is one link.
It may be o.k. for people without a thyroid gland problem but, in general, it's not recommended.
Only if you take it with selenium.
But what are you lab values?
If you need selenium and iodine....
This IS the problem, isn't it. No one tests urinary excretion as a routine when thyroid levels are problematic. Meanwhile population testing indicates that 40% of people over age 60 in Canada and 28% of those over 40 are getting mildly or moderately inadequate dietary iodine.
The UK does not cooperate with WHO to provide any data. 28 countries in Europe do.
Is your reflexologist a thyroid expert?
Even among those with a lot of experience, the issues surrounding iodine, whether from kelp or otherwise, are argued over at great length and in much depth. I certainly would not be taking the word of anyone who has not at the very least done a lot of reading and can explain exactly why they think it right for you. Simply having low thyroid hormone levels is an inadequate justification on its own.

To be fair she didnt say go out and buy Kelp she just said she had heard it can be of help. thanks for your advice I will give kelp a miss.
Not good if you have a thyroid problem! I had dire consequences when I took to speed up metabolism & weight loss on advice of tv specialist! Few week later he advised please don't take kelp if you have a thyroid condition!!
