Welcome to the forum, Bizzilizzi76.

Sea kelp is high in iodine which isn't recommended for hypothyroid patients. Have you had your thyroid levels tested? Undiagnosed and under treated hypothyroidism can cause weight gain.

Yes, though I haven't the results, I am however due to get my bloods done within the month. Thanks for your advice.

Bizzilizzi71,

The Data Protection Act entitles patients to a copy of their results. Ask your GP receptionist for a copy of your results and ranges and post them in a new question for advice.

Iodine will not help you lose weight in a sustainable manner. What it does is stimulate the thyroid gland to make more hormone - which might, possibly, make you lose weight. But it's only short term, because an over-stimulated, sick gland will soon crash, you will become more hypo than before, and put on more weight. Really not worth it.

You're welcome. :)

When This Morning TV programme featured kelp as a diet aid health shops couldn't keep it on the shelves. Very irresponsible reporting. Flogging a thyroid gland, whether a healthy one or not, is not wise.

I bought it from Holland and Barrett, it's been sitting on my shelf since too frightened to take them 🤔

Not the same.

Interestingly the widely used extract carrageenan is currently in the spotlight - for example:

Is it really likely to flog the thyroid (healthy or unhealthy) at a daily recommended dose of 150mcg?
