I've been taking this for 14 years and have had no problems. In fact I know that whenever I've stopped taking it for a while, the old feelings of nausea and discomfort soon return. Clemmie
The feelings of nausea and discomfort will ALWAYS return. That is because the Lansoprazole is only masking symptoms, and not resolving them.
I used to take Lansoprazole for 'acid reflux' - according to my doctor. However, if you have hypothyroidism, it is far more likely that you have LOW stomach acid which, along with a weakened oesophagus muscle which is also common in under-treated hypothyroidism, leads to partly-digested food being regurgitated and causing a sensation of acid and nausea.
On the surface of it, it seems as if Lansprazole and other Proton Pump Inhibitors are the answer to a prayer. However, they are not. They prevent production of acid which actually reduces the quality of the digestion, leading to nutritional deficiencies and other problems.
An example of this is myself. After several years of taking PPIs for so-called 'acidity', I suddenly developed chronic, crippling diarrhoea. My GP said he had 'never seen anything like it before'. When he examined me he got a shower of my problem! His conclusion? IBS. Take Buscopan. It did not work. After more than three months of suffering he suggested codeine to control it - not to cure it, but to control it.
After some research, I found the cause of my diarrhoea, with no help from my GP who was quite happy for me to take an addictive substance (codeine) without investigating further. Runaway C.Diff infection. Caused by...PPIs. They reduce the stomach acidity so much that you can no longer kill harmful bacteria in your gut. Sone studies have clearly linked PPIs with C-Diff Associated Diarrhoea.

Another study found only a 'modest potential risk'.

I include the second study which found only a 'modest risk' because it proves how careful one has to be when reading such articles: you should always read any Disclosures. in this case:
"Disclosure: David A. Johnson, MD, FACG, FASGE, FACP, has disclosed the following relevant financial relationships
Served as an advisor or consultant for: AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP; TAP Pharmaceuticals Products, Inc.; and Dynogen Pharmaceuticals Inc.
Received grants for clinical research from: AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP and TAP Pharmaceutical Products, Inc."
In other words, his research is funded by pharmaceutical companies. Unlikely then, that the result would present PPIs in a negative light.
The fact is, that there are better ways to deal with this particular hypothyroid symptom, which will not put you at risk from C.Diff and will not further inhibit your digestion and leave you open to B12 deficiency as a result.

I gradually weaned myself off the PPIs very, very gently, and I occasionally take diluted Organic Cider Vinegar with honey. However, since my Thyroid medication was optimised, I no longer have that problem unless I eat late at night.
IMPORTANT: I would like to point out that if you are taking anti-inflammatories or have an ulcer, then it would be unwise to stop PPIs.
My non-medical understanding is that it is not a good idea to take this medicine. Often when you are Hypo the problem is LOW acid - so suppressing it more can lead to problems - in particular LOW B12 which can be serious.
It could be that you are under-medicated for your thyroid. Or could you try a more natural product like Betaine HCL from Higher Nature. If you type Acid Reflux into the Search Box on the Green Bar at the top of the page I am sure you will read lots of useful information.
I have also read - maybe here - that these medicines should only be used in the very short term as an emergency. Try a bit of Bi-carb in warm water - like our grandparents did
This is a link and as the symptoms for high acid and low acid are similar the GPs are probably unaware that if hypo more likely to be low. I take Betaine tablets before a meal, particularly protein, and have no problems now. If you do purchase, if you use the Amazon Affiliate link and thyroiduk get a few pence.
In my case, I take this medication as I have a hiatus hernia which slides up into my chest. This causes extreme discomfort and nausea. I also have psoriatic arthritis for which I take anti inflammatories on a regular basis. I haven't found any other way of controlling this (hiatus hernia) and certainly would not consider surgery, which appears to be the only other option, as it is very complicated and often causes more problems than it cures. In order to promote good gut bacteria I take probiotics as I know that I would be prone to stomach bugs due to taking PPIs but in 14 years of taking it I can count the number of actual stomach upsets on one hand. I'm not saying this is right for everyone and I am not giving advice, I am just providing my own experience of this type of drug. Clemmie

Hi Sue
When I first started experiencing symptoms the GP gave me Lansoprazole thinking I had a stomach ulcer, it just made things worse. I took it and felt little effects.
Last year I had a similar bout of nausea, loss of appetite and feeling like there was something stuck in my chest. GP told me it was nothing but turned out to be a H.Pylori infection.
Have they done a stool sample or any other gastro tests?
Hope you feel better soon x
Hi Penrose
No he hasn't suggested any other test, just these tablets, which the post have been sent to me on this subject,on not going to take anymore
