Hi all, I have been diagnosed with auto immune thyroid disease. Spent 2 years on thyroxine (75mg) undiagnosed for 9 years. My tsh keeps cycling wildly one month its high, then normal, then low. After suffering for all these years I demanded to see an endocrinologist. I'm due to see her at the end of the month in Oxford. Just wanted to go prepared. What should I ask, what should I get from the appointment. So worried she will be the same as the doctor not have a clue, as I have heard Autoimmune is harder to treat. I hope she is nice has anyone else seen her. Her name is Dr Karavitaki.

Arjs, 90% of hypothyroidism is caused by autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) so your endo will be aware of it. Bullet point a list of medication and supplements you take and your symptoms with dates iif you can recall. Endo may not want the lists but they will act as an aide memoire for things you want to discuss.

Treatment for Hashi's is the same as for non-autoimmune hypothyroidism ie Levothyroxine. Many Hashi sufferers find that gluten-free diet can reduce the level of antibodies and reduce the number of Hashi flares and fluctuations they experience.
