Can you insist on a pituitary test when your steroid levels are low but you haven't got Addison's?

My 9 yr old daughter is ill on a daily basis with adrenal insufficiency symptoms but nobody will do anything for her because she hasn't got Addisons, I'm at my wits end, she has sickness dizziness neck pain chest pain headache abdominal pain always feels tired cold condition worsens during exercise and after illness but endocrine insist there is nothing wrong even though her blood steroids are low.

  • I think it is beyond belief that there is no-one who can help your very young daughter.

Can your doctor refer her to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children? These are details of how to get referred.

This is another link and the symptoms sound similar to your daughter's.

  • The thyroid and adrenals are very closely linked and it is difficult to know which is the primary cause of the symptoms. Typically when thyroid is low the adrenals work overtime to help, producing extra cortisol, adrenaline etc. and this can keep the body working. Eventually when illness or stress hits the person there is no spare capacity to cope and health declines rapidly.

In this situation do you treat thyroid or adrenals? I would suggest that a trial with thyroid hormones would be a good starting point.
