Has anyone in the UK been to a "Lipid" Clinic. Would they know about the T4 connection to high cholesterol, or would I have to go armed
LIPID (Cholesterol) CLINICS, anyone?: Has anyone... - Thyroid UK
LIPID (Cholesterol) CLINICS, anyone?
I definitely would go armed. I would not assume that a lipid specialist is aware of a connection of cholesterol levels to an organ outside the GI tract and liver.
After my experiences, I would not assume anyone knows anything! Go armed. Might not be a bad idea to take a copy of any thyroid test results you can get hold of as well.
I'd be interested to know more about this clinic. Have you been referred? What criteria - e.g. what cholesterol level do you have to qualify you? Are they just ways of funnelling statins down patients' throats?
(My GP almost fell off his chair at how low mine was - so I don't think I shall be getting any first hand experience. )

Hi Helvella. I have had a cholesterol of between 7.1 and 8.5 most of my adult life. I have also had a T4 of 11.5 - 12 for 13 years AT LEAST :-0 You think the GPs would know the same if not more than us. Its getting flaming ridiculous now. I intend to take all the articles I can find, now, after seeing the replies here, and may even put them in a binder and MAKE them take it a look at it, with a re appointment when they have proved they have done so.
How is your Homocysteine ? When my cholesterol began to climb so did the Homocysteine. The H has now gone down with adequate B12 Folic etc. Not worried about the cholesterol as my brain needs it as do my other hormones. Homocysteine is a better indicator of long term health but of course not tested in the NHS....I wonder why ? I think the research from the 70's was shelved and ignored as it was a very cheap treatment. More money to be made with statins. Did you go to the Clinic and how did it go ?
Hi Marz. GP still not sorted it out, and in the meanwhile sent my bloods for parathyroid to the wrong lab, and also failed to enroll me on the fitness scheme, and even didn't tell me about a fibroid on my womb (found out about it from the hospital notes I requested last week). I'm sacking them, Marz - I have had enough!
Maybe try the Homocysteine protocol and see if that helps your cholesterol. Something that would no doubt surprise your Docs if it worked for you....it must be so frustrating . Think fibroids have a link with being Hypo - had those too ! Homocysteine is expensive to have tested I have noticed....probably to discourage it being done. Higher Nature do something called TMG which helps to methylate the Homocysteine from the body.
I would go armed with a copy of "The Great Cholesterol Myth: why lowering your cholesterol won't prevent heart disease" or "Ignore the Awkward.: How the Cholesterol Myths Are Kept Alive" or "The Cholesterol Myth: The Biggest Medical Conspiracy of The Last 50 Years" or "The Great Cholesterol Con" (all available on Amazon).
Think twice before taking the statins that they will undoubtedly press on you. Again on Amazon, if you put "statins truth" in the search bar you will come up with more titles than I can conveniently list here, but basically the main beneficiaries of liberal (over-)prescription of statins are the pharmaceutical companies.
Lastly, don't let them tell you that it is wrong to eat butter and eggs. These are not only not harmful, they are positively beneficial.
I would never give a practice the satisfaction of claiming more money from the NHS by attending any clinic at all.
