The levo is making me lose so much weight that I now can't cope with my busy job and am thinking of finishing! am supposed to be on 150 levo but stared to feel better on less! Ended up on 25 levo which was good for a while managed to put on weight but then felt so tired and even faint! Was in Australia a few weeks ago and had to get bloods done there Tsh 99. 48 T4 6.6. T3 2 TG antibodys 72 and TPO antibodys they stopped counting at 1300! Have asked my Gp if I could have armour thyroid he said no right away even when I offered to pay!!!! He put me right back on to 125 levo and half a stone is nearly off in a week!!! I am at breaking point and ready at 51 yrs old to finish my beauty therapy job on the grounds of my underactive thyroid is burning too many calories!!!!!!!! How ridiculous does this sound?????? Any advice would be fantastic. Thank you.

I lost 2 stone on Levo, which being underweight I could I'll afford, I also had a lot of other problems with it. I only got weight back when I gave up on doctors and went down the self medicating route. I don't advocate this as the right option but I was left to die and had no alternative. Good luck trying to get it from a doctor though, there are very few that will prescribe it, but keep trying different ones, you might get one in the end. Alsochecked its not been given a double red status by your health authority. If it has you could be wasting your time and may need to go private

Thank you for that. I'm the same I'm underweight and have terrible headaches and joint pain with this medication. Will have to keep trying but have been so long like this getting nowhere so starting to get depressed with it all! Hope yours is stabilised now!!

If you email louise.warvill@thyroiduk.org she has a list of sympathetic private doctors. Dr Skinner did say that some people who are hypothyroid do lose weight although it's unusual.

If your doctor won't prescribe NDT, have you considered asking if he will prescribe some T3 to go with your T4?

Hi I did ask that a while ago. He said a few people in the practice were on that, but unfortunately that was at the time, he first referred me to an endo and made the mistake of asking this, in the referral letter, which did not go down well with the endo and and the letter back was very snippy, saying liothyorine was not the wonder drug and people were much better on levo!!! That was the first time he refused to see me It's such a battle and running out of options now!!! Thanks for you reply this is giving me encouragement!!!!

Next suggestion. Have you considered trying Nutri Thyroid. I take it along with levo. It's a weaker form of NDT and available as a health supplement.

The Endo is fortunate neither he nor his family suffer they way some of us do on levo. He would prescribe promptly for them and, yes, it might prove a wonder drug for them.

Could your GP not try another endo - get the list from Louise and ask your GP to refer you to an endo off of the list. You can now go to any hosp you want to and don't have to stick to your local one.

Tweed,

Ask your GP to prescribe a trial of 20mcg T3 in combination with your Levo. You'll need to reduce your Levo by 60mcg to achieve an equivalent dose. It's enabled me to tolerate T4 when I couldn't before and has stopped my weight loss although I haven't gained any. if he won't help PM me for an online source.
