What I'd say is as a school girl I had some very bad nosebleeds. I always remember my Mum having very bad nosebleeds, both of us at a time before diagnosis. These days I get a very slight nose bleed, where it never reaches the nostril, more dried crusty blood sticks to the sides. More an awareness of some bleeding. Did you see recent discussion about mucous? That has been a bigger trouble for me since being ill though.

Hi. I have never heard about a connection between thyroid illness and nose bleeds, but I had horrendous nose-bleeds as a child - would wake up with the pillow soaked. Eventually I had my nose cauterized when I was 16, and this did the trick until I became pregnant at 24 years old, and they started again, but nowhere near as heavy as they had been before the cauterizing.

Interesting question Beaton. Since November I have been having terrible nosebleeds - three times a week with the last one lasting for 25 minutes - there are two factors though, at around the same time I had a bronchoscopy but also started Liothyronine 20mcg three times a day and 75mcg of Levothyroxine (was previously on 150mcg of Levo) - any connection do you think?

Yes Terri, any tubes can cause damage but I put mind down to thyroid.x

Might be worth checking liver function, may also be body's way of getting rid of excess iron....x

Hi-I had a nose bleed when my Levo was increased from 50mcg to 75mcg -never had them before. Spoke to the Doc-he'd never heard of this before but when meds down to 50 again-no more nose bleeds! Don't know why-maybe something to do with increased blood pressure? Take Care.

Thanks all of you who have replied. I never had nose bleeds until a few years ago.there are very minor. and occur only about every six weeks or so.Once in someone's garden drinking tea. Recently one woke me in the night. I told the endo. on last visit that they had become less frequent and he just looked blank.(No change there then!) I shall look into mucus/iron etc..

I have had nose bleeds on and off since developing hypothyroidism. I am sure I have read somewhere that they are related to the condition. I never had them otherwise so I am sure mine are related. I still get the odd one and all sorts of other nasty stuff up my nose :-(

Yes Beaton it is too much of a coincidence. There are some references to them being related online I will post links (but nothing really scientific and explanatory) they refer to heart and circulation problems. I had the nose bleeds before getting any diagnosis or medication as well as after medication. I also got and get awful heart pains too and my heart rate is 20 beats a minute faster than before. Maybe there is a link there? I think vitamin k is important for blood clotting I bet we lack that darn thing too!

Hypothyroidism and nose bleeds:

ehow.co.uk/about_547199...

I thought this one was about it too but it does not directly relate the two. However it is interesting - hypothyroid and yellow skin - plus other fascinating connections for other serious illnesses:

dailymail.co.uk/health/...

Given the considerable number of posts on the internet about it, if they aren't related - why are so many people asking?

I had severe nose bleeds when I was nursing my late husband through the late stages of his cancer. The whole experience was totally distressing and as when the nurses took my blood pressure it was normal it was put down to stress induced but I did go to the doctor and was prescribed Naseptin nasal cream. The cream did help to clear it up long term but when the bleed was heavy I used the thumbs up method to stop it. It was all very scary and I had never experienced anything like it before. Strangly they started again on the aniversary of his death, not quite so bad but still including the night time ones that start when your asleep and wake you up. Didn't get them on the second aniversary and none since.

Oh HypoT,sorry to hear of your difficult time. I wonder if a body under stress, for whatever reason is the cause?? Thanks for replying.xx

I was having severe nosebleeds just before I was diagnosed Hypothyroid. Everyday for about 2 weeks and it would take 3 hours sometimes before they'd stop. The GP that diagnosed me told me that nosebleeds and heavy periods were symptoms because being hypothyroid effected blood clotting factors.

I have Graves and am overactive. However I suspect that I had UNDERactive thyroid issues throughout my late childhood and teens; certainly some kind of undiagnosed thyroid disorder. During this time I suffered badly with inflamed sinuses which woud be liable to bleeding (and become re-infected) after any cold or infection. My impression then (and now) was that something went wrong with mucus production during these times - "dry", fragile sinuses, unrelieved by the steaming recommended by gps.

Interestingly, this was one of the things that cleared up completely as my thyroid become overactive and Graves was diagnosed. But I do have high blood pressure now, and that can definately be a cause of nosebleeds for some ... so perhaps get your blood pressure checked, & take a good multivitamin supplement to help keep sinus tissue healthy?

One other thought that occurs to me as a much less likely and completely speculative cause, is that I have uterine polyps & fibroids which I feel - and I stress, it's only my feeling - are thyroid related. They have caused me major bleeding problems in the past ... so it occurs to me that PERHAPS thyroid could cause overgrowth of tissue in other mucus areas. If nothing else works, perhaps ask your gp whether you might have a nasal polyp that could cause bleeding.

Good luck!

This is very interesting as I too suffered repeated heavy nosebleeds as a child , my mother took me everywhere about it and we never got a definite answer . It eased up in my teens then came back briefly in my twenties . I was diagnosed with Hashis in my forties and often wondered if there was a connection . Good luck with your health .

It's very odd so many people have them.

My Dr. said nothing to do with me being hypo/Hashi or Hagermans!

It happens when I have a shower, doesn't last very long either.

Totally baffled!

just once I had a nose bleed that was off and on about 24 hours...I had to drive myself to hospital...that was a yukky experience. They never looked into it more...if it had continued they were going to pack my nose, I think that's what they said. At this point I already had hypothyroidism...At this point I had major ton of stress.....At some point, and there not sure when exactly, I have developed mild lupus....And all at the same time was then peri-menopausal....not sure if any of that helps you. My friend had nose bleeds all through school...she also had hyperhidrosis, and that phobia where she was uncomfortable around people and going out (stress again)..she got graves disease in her 40's...I also remember the doctor in emergency telling me as I had that big nose bleed, that my blood pressure was kinda elevated...Doc says it has to come out somewhere....(thought that was a dumb statement)...

Hi Dj, I have heard in the past, people like my grandmother saying the cause of nosebleeds was blood pressure,so with that's right I don't know. The idea of stress interests me, illness can cause stress, worth a thought. Thank you.x
