Runny nose
Well it might be the fillers in the levothyroxine tablet. Some use acacia, and its a known irritant causing breathing problems for people who are sensitive to it. Have you tried taking an anti histamine with it?
Here is a link to what is in each tablet. thyroiduk.org/tuk/treatment...

Oh yes.
The other day I was walking through town when I felt a little drizzle roll from my nostril down to my lip. I rushed into a nearby coffee shop for a napkin as I tasted the saltiness on my lips. A barista handed me a clump of napkins looking at me quite worried, to which I then rushed into the loo as I was then alarmed that I must’ve looked quite awful to have provoked such a reaction in him. My face looked normal to me (however normal for me might not look normal to others~I often look slightly swollen-faced, eyes all crusty from embedded sleep stuck in my eyelashes {try as I might to remove this with eye make-up remover•even though I’m not wearing make-up•} and teeth all discoloured) so I wondered why he had jumped to attention.
Only earlier today I felt a similar sensation but as I sniffed back in I almost felt like it had bubbled. Luckily I had a wad of tissue in my pocket and nobody was around to see it.
If I recall, I may have had this before about 3 or 4 years ago.
I take 125mcg of Levothyroxine a day and have been on it for over 45 years. I was diagnosed at 10 mths old.
It is just one of the very many things that I have had to put up with.
I bought some Liothyronine (T3) when I was in South America about 6 or 7 yrs ago which made me feel better but when I have mentioned this to doctors here in the U.K. one or two have shaken their head and said I shouldn’t go trying to change my medication and the fact that I have been feeling crappier in the past 2 or 3 years is probably down to the fact that I interfered with my medication back then.
I have done a bit of doctor-shopping in past few years and had contemplated going to see an endocrinologist at the hospital but have heard stories about others doing so and one woman had spent loads of money on 6 or 7 endo’s only to leave their offices in tears because some of them can be mean. I have heard that some are very good but I haven’t found one yet though I had considered going off to Belgium where there’s meant to be a really good one.
Anyway, sorry I have harped on for ages.
This is the kind of rant that I would offload onto my mother at the end of the day but she didn’t answer her phone earlier.
It’s possible Levothyroxine could be the cause. I did ponder it myself as I snorted back in the boogie juice clambering around for my tissues.
This is my first post on here. I will sometimes pop in and have a browse and while it is very interesting I am too knackered to reply to anything as my eyes tire so much quicker these days. But as soon as I saw your question it reminded me of the other day.
Hopefully the other people answering can be a little more concise. Than all my waffle !
Yes yes yes yes....its like i have a constant cold and blowing my nose ALL THE TIME.
I have this every so often for no reason at all. Bit embarrassing if no tissue.
But I do get when eating dinner quite often. Even when not eating spicy food.
Oo and I thought it was just me, I always have tissues as I always seem to have a runny nose, especially when I am out walking or gardening, I think it mostly comes from the fillers as mentioned...I'm also forever forgetting said tissues in pockets and end up with bits in the washing machine!😁
Every morning but not until I get out of bed. I've changed the bedding and mattress thinking it must be house dust mites but that would cause it all the time I'm in bed. Nothing has improved it. I'd never thought of it being connected to any medication.
Try antihistamine, sometimes and particularly when I started on it levothyroxine seems to cause many of the symptoms of hayfever. Antihistamines stop the side-effects. I know it’s the Levothyroxine because I don’t get it from anything else and never had hayfever in over 50 years. Thankfully this histamine complication seems to be subsiding with time possibly because I split my thyroxine dose so there is never a vast amount in my digestive tract.
I have the problem but it only started when I started chemotherapy.I have been wondering whether chemo or the various drugs taken after affects the take up of levo.
Hi. That's the strangest thing as I have been wondering why my nose just runs all day since I've been on levo. I've tried antihistamines for allergies but they don't work either.
I know some people say they are sensitive to the fillers and that may well be your problem, but I thought I'd mention.... I developed hay fever when I was in my 40s, and my neighbour developed it when she was in her 70s, so it's always possible this is happening... or some other allergy - you're never too old it seems, sadly !
Currently my hay fever is worse than it has ever been. I'm having to take a nasal spray and antihistamine tablets, and sometimes eye drops as well at the moment. Usually the tablets or the spray sorts it, so I think it is particularly bad this year. Tree pollen is my problem. I'm hoping I never get it with flowers and grass!
Edit - just to add, it can be worse at night and when it rains too. Times when you would have thought it would be better.
Yes! My nose will drip water without warning. I'd put it down to a dental implant hitting my sinus. GP gave me a nasal spray which made the inside of my nose scab so stopped using. It's tempting to attribute everything to thyroid function but I was surprised that so many others on thyroxine have the same problem.
do you have a hiatus hernia? this causes nose drip
I have post-nasal drip, which I have learned can be caused by my GERD. GERD can be caused by hypothyroidism. It seems to all be connected.
Me too. I also had a vein in my nose that I had cauterised three times to try and stop nosebleeds. I read up on it and found out dry atmosphere can cause drying of tissue and if a vein has a fault it can 'crack' so vaseline was suggested to apply up the nostril to keep everything moisturised.
Sounded fair enough so I did both nostrils and surprisingly my never ending runny nose stopped! I had had it for years. It only comes back if I stop the vaseline for a few days. Worth a try.
Snots are my constant companions, but not from levothyroxine. Running nose is the indicator of my low immunity. The only salvation for me, when completely unbearable, the detox diet. Five days on raw salads and fruits usually cures my runny nose and skin diseases as well. But it's so hard to be on raw eating. I do not advise anyone, just sharing what helps me.
