After tt In 2007 l found adcal had been added to my repeat prescription, despite loosing 2 parathyroid glands and been on a calcium drip after surgery l wasn't spoke to regarding the adcal, my gp could not find in my notes why I had been prescribed adcal so it was removed....... I now have severe vutamin d deficiency at <7.5 and low calcium, Coincidence?

It's common to have a calcium dip blip after TT but it usually rights itself within days, as in my case. Parathyroids may have been touched or something during thyroid surgery. I was prescribed calcium but didn't go back to the hospital to collect it as I was too fatigued for the long journey and a subsequent blood test showed calcium as fine.

Parathyroidectomy is a different thing and calcium should be monitored.

I think your GP surgery was negligent. They could have checked with the endo or specialist who originally prescribed adcal for the why and wherefore, or they could have done a vitD and calcium blood test before stopping the prescription.

I was vitD <10 in November and a loading dose 40,000iu daily for a week and 2 months 2,000iu daily have brought it up to 116. I feel a lot better for it too.

That's reassuring you feel better !!! How long did it take? The gp just looked through computer and couldnt see anything do removed the adcal from my prescription! It was almost 7 years ago....I remember when I left hospital I was given tablets to put in water for a few days , my vitamin d is < 7.5 I've been given cholecalciferol 20000u three. Times a week for 3 months..... I've had calcium checked a few year ago was told it was fine... As far as I'm aware never had vitamin d checked ever! X

I don't think I had until I blagged trainee GP into testing vitD, ferritin, B12 & folate.

Skin plumped out & colour improved after about 4 weeks, felt better after about 6 weeks, particularly mood which improved massively. Stopped having hissy fits and smashing things:-D

I haven't had vitD or B12 since 20 Jan. Had leg cramps and knee & hip joint pain so awaiting delivery of vitD and taken 2000mcg B12 which arrived this morning (cross I selected expensive delivery option in error, grrr).

Oh good for you! I got done bloods done cos l knew l wasn't right!! Best money I've spent!!! My b12 etc were in range lower end though 279 range 191/613

Folate 5.2 range 4.6/18.7

Iron 19.0 range 11.0/32.0

Ferritin 59.5 range 13/150

I'm just learning bout vit d so the rest I know little of and wouldn't if even knew bout vitamin d if it wasn't for this site! X

B12 should be high in range. I'd recommend Jarrow's sublingual methylcobalamin.

Ferritin & iron could be higher. Spatone in fruit juice plus 500mg/1000mg vitC are good for this.

I got vitC from Asda and B12 from Amazon. Spatone is widely available and also on Amazon.

I wonder why docs dint realize this? I'm wondering if l should wait abit longer before adding other things? I'm feeling sorry fir these who can't buy these extra things to feel better ! It's a disgrace! X

It's a good idea to interval supplements, mainly so you can determine the culprit if you have adverse effects except for iron + vitC, magnesium + zinc and if you haven't been tested B12 + Folic Acid.

Thanks think be good idea!! Folate was 5.2 range 4.6/18.7.... I'm really surprised at the big difference between bottom of range and top of range!!! X

Yes, no wonder so many people feel unwell when they're bumping along the bottom.

I think you can get a B complex + B12 +folate all in one on Amazon but not sure the B12 element will raise you much. If you get magnesium don't get oxide (which I got) it's hard to absorb, try citrate and make sure to take zinc with it.

I don't know what my magnesium is at it wasn't tested! X

Nor mine, but it is likely that we're all mag deficient thanks to depletion in soil. Serum isn't a good measure & metabolic testing is expensive. If you over medicate you'll get diarrhoea, a good enough guide for me!

This is a very good thread re vits and minerals and if you scroll down to near the end I posted something on magnesium and zinc healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...
