"thyroid epidemic" in the west of ireland....

according to a pharmacist i was talking to the other day...i live i Co Mayo, on the west coast of Ireland. He told me that any doctor in this part of Ireland will tell you that there is an unusually high incidence of hypothyroidism. Eltroxin is the top prescribed drug, he reckons...he said second to aspirin it is the most handled in his pharmacy.

Interesting, isnt it?? im very curious why....i was brought up in UK although my mum is irish, but my thyroid problems only surfaced since i moved here.

There is also a huge amount of people who are gluten intolerant, which i presume is related...

would love to research this but no idea where to start!

ideas welcome :)

fluoride in water???

oops, this is a uk website, i know....but due to the awful lack of thyroid support in ireland i had to post... ;)

It doesnt matter if you are in Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales or on the Moon, you are very welcome here xx

There may be a link, as it does sound like a cluster of sufferers.

I once saw a Homeopath and she said in her country of origin, which I think was Tanzania there is an epidemic of thyroid illness and she attributes it to Fluoride in the water......

Hi, I live in UK but was born in and lived in Galway until I was 11. I have hashimoto's and have felt unwell most of my life! Doctors here are just as bad. I do have a very good doctor who goes by my symptoms and is happy for my Levels to be over the "Guideline" mark as I feel awful when my levels are within range. BUT that said, I have never felt great and am awaiting an Endo appt in Jan to BEG for some T3. Lets see what happens ... but I think I already know the answer as my Doc has told me not ot get my hopes up :(

If you can get your GP to test for rT3 and it comes back high ( sorry don't know the ranges ) this would be evidence of poor T4 conversion and justify your request. Good luck! :)

Fluoride in the water is to blame, which Ireland has been subjected to by the tons for decades. Keeping people down and also ill. Go look at Mary Shomon's site on Thyroid about how fluoride is absolutely terrible for the thyroid. We use unfluorided toothpaste which you can buy at any health food store and even Boots does one. Water should be filtered to get out fluoride, and you can get the whole house filtered. That is clearly the root cause of the epidemic...now the bigger question is why did they do that to Ireland?? One can only guess because it also affects the pineal gland and makes people docile. SO sad! My own Grandmother was from Ireland. I am against all fluoride, it doesn't prevent tooth decay and if you read the reports on it, Nazi's used it in the concentration camps to keep the prisoners docile! It is rat poison and has no right to be in anything! Start there and see if it helps you. There are many, many Facebook groups called, "Ireland Against Fluoridation in our water" and by each county and I suggest you check them out. Or Google that title and see what you find.

definetly agree, although it doesnt explain the huge amount of hypothyroidism specifically i the west. Unless there is more fluoride added here. We spend a fortune on bottled water, although use tap for kettle etc...so about half and half id say.

Increase in radiation from the nuclear accident at Fukushima in Japan? Maybe blown in by the winds going west to east across the world?

If its Hashimotos then it will be diet related.....affluence brings convenience foods - in days gone by everything would have been simply home made....
