Have just been reading about these tablets from Life Enhancement They are quite expensive and claim to be from animal glandular sources and that one tablet contains 1/4 thyroxine. Has anyone tried them and what would be the equivent of this dose be in levothyroxine? I am interested because I take 50 levo. don't have hashi. and I am wondering if they would be any good fo me. Thanks, Jacquie

The thyroid hormones, thyroxin (T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3), regulate growth and metabolism. Every organ, tissue and cell is affected by thyroid hormones. Without them we cannot grow, the brain does not develop properly and bone does not mature. Thyro Plex contains thyroxin-free raw thyroid concentrate along with raw adrenal, pituitary and spleen concentrates which work synergistically to support the thyroid and normalize its function as part of the delicate endocrine system. Kelp is also included in the formula as a rich source of organic iodine. Iodine aids in the development and functioning of the thyroid and is an integral part of thyroxin. Iodine deficiency leads to enlargement of the thyroid gland known as goiter and to hypothyroidism.

The above description says that it is thryoxine-free so there could be no equivalence.

However, another source refers to it as being "herbal" - and I cannot see how that is valid for a product based on animal extracts!!! :-)

This is often the case with similar products - we simply do not get to the bottom of what they are and what biologically active substances they do actually contain.

We end up in the difficult situation that if it does contain thyroid hormone, then it would be treated by UK authorities as a prescription-only medicine, but some places insist it does NOT contain any! (If it were a POM then we would have to remove the source name in your post to conform to our guidelines.)

Usual advice, if you are thinking of taking anything with significant iodine then do your research. Be careful. Kelp can contain large amounts of iodine.

Thanks Rod, I do wonder what is it this product which 'contains glandular thyroid tissue'.
