Anyone here heard of Dr. Ken Berry?

He's got a clinic in TN, USA. believes in the Keto diet, has a YouTube channel, does seminars around the country and has a new book coming out next month. "Lies my doctor told me."

Here's another nice pic I took. :) This guy was flying overhead with another - maybe a partner, next to a river. Not edited. I caught it just like this!

He seems to be dabbling in the carnivore diet at the mo'.

What is it that you want to know about this guy aside from the fact

that in typical U.S. fashion he is monetizing himself beyond his

practice. I guess in Tennessee a family doctor doesn't earn as much

money as he'd prefer so yes, he is doing extra stuff to make more.

He supports the keto way of eating....any thoughts on that? New to it. Doing research. Pros and cons on this diet. Anyone here had any experience with this?

I've heard of Ken Berry and I've found some of his videos quite useful. I think he does have a tendency to string them out too long though, and quite often I get bored and turn them off. His videos can be found here :

I've been trying to eat a lower carb diet for some time now. I have successfully reduced my HbA1c (although it needs to go lower yet) but haven't lost an ounce in weight. I actually do like eating a lower carb diet, and have been using the recipes on the Diet Doctor website. I find the recipes a lot more satisfying and satiating than eating a high carb diet. I actually paid to join Diet Doctor - the first time I've ever done something so revolutionary!

"Keto flu" is unpleasant while your body gets used to eating a different proportion of carb/fat/protein. But it is easy to get over the problem.

Good luck, if you experiment.

What basically is "keto flu?" It's worth a try. Thinking about trying it.

It’s your body reacting to changing energy pathways from carb to fat. Linked to mineral depletion so they suggest bone broth to compensate. Lost 2 stone prior to TT. Nothing since but not been strict at all. Quite bad in fact fighting gets tiring emotionally and leads to bad habits coming back.

Keto flu is the symptoms people get from carb withdrawal. I think it is caused by your body having much lower levels of insulin than usual, and this has knock-on effects on water levels in the body. The kidneys expel a lot of water during the early days of keto, and people lose electrolytes in the process i.e. salt (sodium), potassium and magnesium. Low salt, potassium and magnesium can give people headaches, they feel tired and brain fogged, and they will probably get cramp

Thanks for the warning. Will read up on that and do what I can to avoid it.

Personally keto made my hypothyroid symptoms worse but great for type 1 diabetes. Low carb 65-80g per day works for both.

I watched couple of his videos but I’m after Dr Eric Berg, love his videos. I found his way of Keto works wonders for me - minus 54lbs in 7 months and feeling good again. Didn’t have Keto flu probably because I was supplementing with vitamins, as the flu kicks in if you’re vitamin and minerals deficient. I keep carbs up to 20g a day. Everybody has to find what works for them

I have been on a keto type diet for almost 35 years and am now 70 years old and no health issues. I was given this diet all those many years ago by a progressive dr. initially to lose weight but also to try to keep from getting diabetes which claimed my sister, My mother also was a type 2 diabetic. Anyone who wants to try it really should read up on it first...to understand exactly what it is. This type of eating has been around a long time and used by doctors to successfully treat epilepsy in children. It is NOT a high protein diet. Too much protein will throw you out of ketosis. Over the 35 years of eating like this, I have had times when I went off...but always got back on, because I feel SO much better eating this way. I have hypothyroidism and do take NDT, but it's the keto way of eating that keeps my weight in check, my joints feeling good and my health good for a 70 year old. Even my Dr. always says she's amazed at how good my skin looks for a 70 year old. I really think it's the good fat in the keto way of eating that helps.

As I have recommended whenever I talk about the keto way of eating and ketosis...I always recommend reading books that give you all the healthy advise for changing over to this way of eating. I do not like to call it a diet, because it's not. It's a way of life. Yes, if done properly people will lose weight. But as with all other DIETS...if you go off... the weight will return. If done properly...it is a healthy way of eating. Carbs are not just carbs. You have Total carbs, Total sugar, dietary fiber, which you subtract from total carbs, etc. You have to understand how protein affects ketosis...how caffeine affects ketosis. Why you have to drink more water and possibly take supplements. You have to understand the science behind the body's energy sources. For people who just jump into it, there is a high failure rate. When I changed over to this way of eating, I lost weight, but my long term goal was to keep from getting Type 2 diabetes. Another benefit that I only realized after I had a period of time when I started adding more carbs, was that my joints started to hurt. Once I was back in ketosis, my joint pain went away.

It's not easy. I see people eating HUGE cakes and pies and all sorts of sweets and I get a pang of...sure which I could do that, But I know I can't.

I'm doing a lot of reading for sure! Want to have a realistic menu planned out before I jump in totally. I'm just not buying any more bread or anything with sugar or fructose in it for now. Have to give up my oat meal too. O well. I know what you mean about cakes etc. I love to bake cookies and the like so, will just save that for Christmas and maybe one other day of the year. If I do 90-95% of this diet, I'll be good. I want to feel better more than I want to eat all that stuff that is killing me. Look at it that way and it'll help with that 'sugar vision' we suffer from now and then.

I have read that sugar is more addictive then cocaine and I really believe it. We are bombarded with sugar not only in baked goods, but in almost all processed foods. If anyone was watching me shop for groceries, they'd be laughing, because I am constantly reading the back of boxes and cans to check for sucrose, fructose etc. I check for total carbs, fiber...on and on. Very boring! The products that are branded low carb can actually be much higher carb then some not marketed that way.

I have a husband who I truly think has a sugar addiction. He is an educated man, who knows the way he eats has contributed to his high BP and other health issues. He eats low carb when he eats what I cook, but I find hidden cookies and other high sugar snacks. We have talked about this at length, but I have finally accepted that he is an adult and makes his own choices.

Might be tough to give up the sugar... like I mentioned before - I'll go for 90% compliance at first...if I blow it I'll just keep going, and get better at it as time goes on. Like you said, this is a lifestyle, not just a fad way to eat till I reach a goal. Once I've seen all these pounds roll off, after all that hard work...why would I want to sabotage it and go backwards. I don't have any other huge huge health problems right now...but if I don't do something, I could develop them, so now is the time. My plan is to read as much as I can and start on full force, the first week in April. It'll be a fun month too cause we'll be outside doing a lot of planting, weeding and birdwatching. :)
